Grrrrrrr!
OMFG! I just spent an hour troubleshooting my computer, trying to figure out why Photoshop was telling me my scratch disk was full when I have piles of memory available. I defragmented the drive, I deleted files, I changed the memory cache - everything I could think of. And do you know what the problem was? When I set the crop size, it defaulted to inches instead of pixels. No fucking kidding, I don't have enough memory for an 800 inch image!
I'm trying to be glad I figured out the problem, but I'm pissed I wasted so much time on it.
