Chapter 3
Before getting out of the car, Ryo checked himself again on the rearview mirror, making sure he looked inconspicuous enough not to be recognized. He was glad that he always has a hat and jacket in the glove compartment. He thought they’d come in handy one of these days.
Then he frowned. This has to be the ugliest looking hat he had ever seen. He didn’t even remember how he ended up possessing such a thing. Now he understood why he thought it was best hidden in the glove compartment. The jacket was unflattering, of the deadest color, and the design…Ryo cringed. Maa, he guessed it would be perfect if he’s aiming to be unnoticeable. It was too perfect in his opinion. He's sure he looked more like an eyesore now.
Ryo crossed the street to the address. So it wasn’t a pizza place or a night club as he had thought earlier. It was a residential building. Not the expensive ones he expected Johnny would choose for someone under him to live in. Still, Ryo’s heart skipped in excitement. The thrill of doing something you shouldn’t be doing is overpowering. He entered the lobby, looking as casual and innocent as he can be. He greeted the receptionist the way a tenant would and it worked! She didn’t suspect a thing.
The excitement was building up inside him as the elevator carried him further up. What he was hoping to get from doing this, he wasn’t sure. He knew he would meet her eventually since he and Tegoshi are in one group together. But he didn’t understand why he felt like checking her out beforehand. Was it because he was bored?
“I need a new hobby” he said loudly to himself.
The elevator opened and Ryo tried hard not to stick out his head (which was still hidden under the hideous hat) first which was a really suspicious thing to do, and just walk out normally. And now he was walking aimlessly along the corridor. He only got as far as the number of the floor when manager-san caught him eavesdropping earlier. He didn't even get her name. What are the chances of running into her in this empty hallway?
Ryo’s excitement started to go down a notch with every aimless step he took. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all. He started to kick the wall repeatedly in frustration when he heard a door lock click not far away. He quickly found a hiding place-a gap between two rooms, barely able to fully conceal him. He slowly peeked. He didn’t even know what to expect of her, physically. The details they were given were so generic it was impossible to even paint a mental picture of how she was supposed to look. So Ryo just got creative and prepared to see a blonde beauty.
But all he saw was a girl dragging a big garbage bag out the door. She looked Asian. She wasn’t striking either. From where he was hiding, Ryo started inspecting her. She was short, and kinda chubby, wearing an oversized white T-shirt and shorts. And she was barefoot! Her black hair carelessly tied up and she slumped as she struggled to fit the garbage bag in one of the metal bins outside. She was obviously worn-out, at least she looked like she was.
Ryo stepped out of his little hiding place and just leaned on the wall, not caring if she sees him. He didn’t find any reason to act all shady anymore. She could’ve been just a hired help, from one of those Call-A-Service companies. Besides, it was really unlikely for Tegoshi’s fan to wander around on her first day in Japan. She might be having her beauty rest now, exhausted from the flight from whatever country it was she was from.
Finally, the girl had successfully shoved the bag fully into the bin. She clapped her hands to get rid of imaginary dust and turned towards the door. She slightly jumped when she saw the figure who seemed to have magically appeared out of nowhere and was leaning on the hallway a few feet from her door.
She eyed him as she headed back. He looked like one of those detectives she sees on TV, only his hat was uglier and his jacket furrier. She suddenly had this uncomfortable feeling that he was looking at her even though she couldn’t see his eyes because his hat was pulled too low over his head. She blinked. He suddenly looked familiar just now. But she immediately dismissed the thought, went in and shut the door. She was too tired to think of anything else right now. Ignoring her grumbling stomach, she headed to the bedroom and plopped down the bed. She buried herself deep into the covers. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
