Season finale (though I hope not series finale) of Lie to Me tonight at 9 pm!
One thing I really love about Lie to Me (may it get a season 4 pick up!) and Cal Lightman is his relationship with his daughter. When the series started, he was in many ways your basic asshole genius character complete with your basic English accent. It's a character that I tend to enjoy watching but I'm glad that as the series has progressed Cal's character, like his accent *g*, has become much more complex and interesting. To me one of the most interesting aspects of his character is his complete devotion to his daughter. You ever want to see him go off the deep end, just look at her funny. And nothing would be left standing between him and her if she was in danger.
I find that his love for Emily grounds his character for me. It gives him dimension and shapes many of his interactions with other characters as well. From Emily flows Cal's interest and focus on other children -- helping them and connecting with them -- which in turn shapes my feelings about the show and about Cal as a character. I most adore characters who need and feel and love and Cal Lightman has become one of my favorites.
Cal: I want to show you something.
Emily: Where's the popcorn? What is this? Is it grandma?
Cal: Yep. Yeah, it is.
Emily: You've never shown me this to me before.
Cal: No. Something I want to tell you Em...
Cal: How are you doing kiddo? Are you alright?
Emily: Yeah.
Emily: I am 99.99% yours. You know you might want to take this test again. There is still a 0.01% chance that people in the lab were lying.
Cal: So I might get lucky you mean?...Right. Me and your mum we gate crashed this awful party at Harvard. I look across the room and there's your mum. She is being chatted up by some astronomer. She's laughing her ass off. All his jokes and stuff. She's flirting with him, you know, as she does. And I caught just the tiniest flash of something.
Emily: Something?
Cal: Yeah, something. Probably just the earliest bit of you just floasting around in there somewhere because it was around that time. I don't know what it was but a scientist's job is to verify, right?
Emily: Would you ever lie to protect me?
Cal: You'd never put me in that position.
Emily: That's deflection and a little naive by the way.
Cal: You see you've been spending far too much time hanging around at my office.
Emily: Just answer the question.
Cal: I'd lie my ass off to protect you.
Emily: Me too.
