I've been seeing a lot of commercials lately for the upcoming movie Shutter, and I'm left feeling more disgusted than ever with the state of American horror.
This is now the third Asian horror hatchet job to come out of Hollywood in as many months.
Do people in this country no longer have any original ideas? Is it because so many real horror fans have turned to east Asia where they know how to do it right after Hollywood for years robbed horror movies of everything that made them good in an effort to get that for some reason coveted PG-13 rating on all their movies so brainless teenagers can dish out all their allowance money to see them? Is this their way of trying to win us back? Making their own severely watered down PG-13 versions of shit we've already seen?
Admittedly, I don't watch the sort of Asian horror that has been getting remade here. I'm not generally a big fan of ghost stories, most of them are ultimately just stories about people helping people and, let's face it, I don't like horror because I want to see shit like that (there are exceptions to this, A Tale of Two Sisters comes immediately to mind, and I've heard Hollywood already put that one under the knife, not aware of any set release date). But that's not the point, the trend still bothers me. Not only because when writers and directors are focusing all their time and energy ripping off another country's ideas robs me of enjoying some original entertainment, I also know that if this trend continues to be successful sooner or later Hollywood will start turning its eye toward the Asian horror that I do like. And I don't ever want to see an American remake of Audition. Especially a PG-13 version of Audition, and we all know that''s exactly what it would be.
