Another minor realization. I really don't need to be as lonely as I think I am.
So this Friday I attempted something I've never done before at Vandy... I threw a party. I had just turned 21 only 3 days before, I had people volunteering to help with the set-up, everything was supposed to go well. And it did! Sure the party had a slow start. It was supposed to begin at 10:30, by 10:50 there were only about 7 people here, but quickly within a couple of minutes, that number easily multiplied into probably 50 or more people crammed into my little Morgan Double's common room. My bartender was MIA for a bit, so I served a few drinks, but before long they kicked me out from behind the bar and I had to work the crowd. After everyone had left a few people stuck around and chilled (even though I really really wanted to go to bed). I played guitar and they sang "Friends in Low Places," then when I felt a blister forming on my thumb, some dumb instinct in my head said "Bite it off before it gets bad." Ridiculously dumb. Now I have a chunk missing out of my finger.
The next morning I was on live TV with the band on ESPN's College GameDay and then the rest of the day was spent with Marching Band, Steel Pan, and my parents. Know what was awesome besides being on National TV and the Jumbotron throughout the game? The game itself! Vandy edged out Auburn and now we're 5-0!!!!! Woohooo!!!! I was so ridiculously tired after the game that when my folks and I went out to Blackstone (as is our tradition), I was falling asleep at the table. I skipped all the tremendous celebrations, called it an early night and woke up the next morning for Pancake Pantry. Didn't really do much else with my day except try to figure out how I could be less tired. I'm still working on that.
Anyway, but that minor realization. Its a big confidence boost. To have the numbers of people who showed up at my party was really cool. Granted there were a lot of freshman seeking out free alcohol, but still, most people came up and wished me a happy birthday. It was such a good time too and clean-up wasn't horrible (but parts of the dorm still feel sticky). I'm not sure why, but I took some satisfaction in seeing trash from my party in the elevators the next morning. It was almost like it was the best party in all of the building that night. Of course, I cleaned up the elevator trash, but not after proudly riding down to the lobby with it.
Well, this has been a really scatter-brained post, but I did it mostly for my own records. Feel free to comment, but I don't feel bad if you can't figure out what to say.
Adios.
