The separation of talent and skill is one of the greatest misunderstood concepts for people who are trying to excel, who have dreams, who want to do things. Talent you have naturally. Skill is only developed by hours and hours and hours of beating on your craft. There’s no easy way around it. No matter how talented you are, your talent is going to fail you if you’re not skilled. If you don’t study, if you don’t work really hard and dedicate yourself to being better every single day, you’ll never be able to communicate with people - with your artistry - the way that you want….The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is: I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. You might have more talent than me; you might be smarter than me. But if we get on a treadmill together, there’s two things: you’re getting off first, or I’m gonna die.
-- Will Smith as quoted in the blog of the ever-talented-and-skilled
Ailis Garcia You can hear passion in words. You can hear passion in music. Passion is some sort of thread that comes through only in communication. It only exists when there is something that WANTS to be heard. When what is expressed sincerely AIMS to reach someone. Passion for this moment is a skill I'm learning to develop. Having a thirst for life has always been a "talent" of mine. I've always been hungry. But finally, I'm now grown enough to know that is far from enough. Channeling that passion and hunger toward specific goals, channeling passion and hunger for this moment, are skills that will lead to greatness.
Had a hardship recently that is now 75% overcome. Been through a lot of hard moments in my life. This is not at all a complaint, but a reflection. A sincere and grateful reflection, for my mistakes have been my greatest teachers. I'm just now learning that we all falter, especially those who may have the most to lose. Those situations shape us for the better, and teach us to devote even more into our craft, our passion, until we're able to give our whole selves to what we enjoy most.
Whether it be a goal, a song, a project, a moment--being able to push our whole being into what we love is itself a skill. It can be called a triumph, or the magic of the human endeavor. Whatever it is, I know it's possible. I've felt it, heard it, seen it, and am now just beginning to understand it enough to practice it.
There's nothing less than everything when it comes to a moment, a song, a friendship. Once that is understood, the world becomes this infinite place where anything is possible.
There are no limits. There are no walls. No boundaries. I thank the stars for my family and friends who've been there this whole way. The world has always had my back. I'm on my way to what I've always dreamt of. I just have to get out of my own way.
