Wow, I actually have seen barf like that before, but I usually identified it as poop 'cos of the shape. That's strange, though. Considering it started recently, I think it would be something he ate. I know nylabones cause some issues with my dogs (but so do greenies)...

He has special hair vomit that is different from this. The little bugger likes to eat hair, it's very annoying cause he hates it when a piece of poo hangs by a hair from his butt and he's running around like a maniac trying to get it off while I'm searching for a leaf(if outside) or tissue to grab the poo and pull it off.
Could potentially be a partial obstruction, straining to poop could be caused by that and puking can also be caused by that as well. I would suggest taking him to the vet just to make sure it isnt something really bad.

my dog had that a bit before i switched her brand of kibble. it just wasnt agreeing with her
