Since you last heard from me, livejournal, I've spent five nights in Munich and two nights in Dresden.

In Munich I was staying in well-known hostel called The Tent, which is... I feel like I've typed this before. Hrm. It is a tent, 100+ beds, plus people sleep on the floor. Only open in summer. Amazing atmosphere since the hostel is more like a camp than a hostel.

While in Munich I went to Dachau. It was extremely off-putting and kind of sickening. I certainly did not enjoy going there, but then I'm really glad that I did. As some of you will know, my great-grandfather (and namesake) was at Dachau for three weeks before he was sent to a camp in France. At Dachau I was able to go into the archives and see the record of him; name, date of birth, hometown, nationality, reason for internment (Political, although that doesn't actually explain much), dates of imprisonment, and where he was sent to. That's it. It made the whole experience even more chilling.

The Dresden old-town was beautiful, and I didn't see anything that would distinguish it from a town that hadn't been leveled by bombs.

While in Dresden I met an englishman at the hostel who was going to Berlin the same day as I was; he said he was planning to hitchhike there and asked if I was interested, obviously I said yes. So, today, after going to bed at 5am and getting up at 10, I hitchhiked to Berlin. I don't really have the patience for it (had to wait an hour to get picked up) nor do I like the uncertainty, but I really enjoyed it as a one-off experience. Plus I saved money on a train ticket, so mise :)

Now, then, I'm in Berlin. I'll be here for seven nights, which is a decent stretch, but time isn't really a concern of mine so I'd prefer to stay in a city for too many days than for not enough.

Take care Australia :)
