Okay after the storm, but still having trouble sleeping because of pain

You might see on the news that Massachusetts had a storm that people are calling a "bomb cyclone" and that hundreds of thousands of people are without electricity.  Although we did get 60 centimeters of snow in one day (that's TWO FEET, my fellow Americans), Norman and I are fine!  It's been windy here, but the super-high winds were south of us, ( Read more... )

How are you doing?

Actually, I am doing quite ok, just busy. The downside of our social security system is that one needs official approval for everything. The last couple of months I've been busy finding out if I can start as a sort of independend researcher and I've decided to go for it. It's very exciting but requires a lot of trust that everything will work out as well, especially financially. As soon as I am up to it, I'll post something about it.

What's winter like in The Netherlands?
Well, we used to have some cold and snow in winter, but due to the climate change, it's now only grey, windy, plus raining or drizzling and around zero and quite humid, which provides a humid kind of cold that I really detest.
This year started all grey, meaning we have days in a row without any sun. Normally we have around 70 hrs of sunshine in January and this January we only had 32. I am really lucky that I am not prone to winter depressions, because for people who are, it's really tough. At our latitude we'll see daylight at 8 AM and it will get dark at around 5.45 PM.
Sometimes it will suddenly start freezing for a couple of days in February, but that is not likely, at least not in the weather forecasts for the next 14 days. And if the temperatures don't drop below zero in the second halve of Februari, they won't do so at all this winter. I don't mind a dry cold, but I do mind weeks of grey skies in humid weather.

Are you in grad school right now, or did Covid put that off?
It's not the covid but my social benefit that forbids me to study. That's also the main reason I wanted to start as an independend researcher, to get out of that situation. If everything goes as i intend it to do, I'll start with a Masters coming September. It's a 1 year masters program and I hope to be able to finish it in a year. We'll see.

I am so glad you could hire these professional snow shovelers because even for them it sounds like a huge job to tackle it! I've never seen so much snow as you describe.
How long will the cold remain, since you said that the piles of snow will last for weeks? And do you have some sun during this time?

I'm really happy you are sleeping better, since you did sleep poorly for such a long time. I hope your physical therapy continues doing a good job!
