Episode 1x10 - Asylum
Plot.
Dean and Sam receive a text message from an 'unknown'* source with coordinates for Rockford, Illinois. Picking up the trail, Sam finds reference to a murder/suicide involving a cop and his wife and Dean finds the Roosevelt Asylum situated on the outskirts of Rockford in Winchester Sr.'s journal. On arrival, they find out that the asylum was the site of a riot in which many of the staff and patients died in 1964. The brothers enter the asylum to find out why people are still dying, and to put a stop to whatever's doing it.
*Unknown = John Winchester.

Ghosts.
The ghosts of the patients at Roosevelt Asylum, killed in a riot in 1964, have haunted the place ever since. However, unlike most hauntings (especially those who died violent deaths in a mental institution) a majority of the spirits aren't there to cause harm, they simply want people to know the damage that Dr. Sanford Ellicott - the Chief of Staff at Roosevelt - did during his experiments on the patients. All the deaths that occurred after the asylum was closed and the building condemned were the result of Ellicott continuing his work in the afterlife.

Sam: It's kind of our job.

Sam: ... I had a crappy guidance counsellor.
Cat: And, Dean. He's your boss?
Sam: ... No.
Dean: [finds stash of super secret documents behind a panel in the wall] This is why I get paid the big bucks.
Dean: All work and no play makes Dr. Ellicott a very dull boy.
Sanford Ellicott: Don't be afraid. I'm going to make you all better.
Cat: Hey, Gavin?
Gavin: Yeah?
Cat: If we make it out of here alive... we are so breaking up.
Dean: Apparently he [Dr. Ellicott Sr.] was experimenting on his patients. Awful stuff. Makes lobotomies look like a couple of aspirin.
Sam: But it was the patients who rioted...
Dean: Yeah, they were rioting against Dr. Ellicott... Dr. Feelgood was working on some sort of extreme rage therapy. He thought that if he could get his patients to vent their anger then they'd be cured of it. Instead, it only made them worse and worse and angrier and angrier. So, I'm thinking, what if his spirit is doing the same thing. To the cop. To the kids in the seventies. Making them so angry they become homicidal.
Dean: What're you gonna do, Sam? The gun's filled with rock salt, it's not gonna hurt me.
Sam: [shoots Dean] No, but it'll hurt like hell.
Sam: [to Dean] That's the difference between me and you. I have a mind of my own. I'm not pathetic. Like you.
Sam: Do we need to talk about this?
Dean: No. I'm not really in the sharing, caring mood.
[phone rings on the bedside table]
Sam: Dean? [picks up and answers phone] Hello? ... Dad?

This episode is Sam's Skin. Where Dean's emotional turmoil was revealed through the shapeshifter, Sam's resentment of Dean and John is pushed forth by Ellicott's 'treatment'.
This episode marks the first time Sam and Dean are electrocuted.
Although Ellicott is obviously a ghost, his ghostly specter takes on corporeal form once his body is burned.
