Episode 1x10 - Asylum

Feb 14, 2006 04:00

Plot.

Dean and Sam receive a text message from an 'unknown'* source with coordinates for Rockford, Illinois. Picking up the trail, Sam finds reference to a murder/suicide involving a cop and his wife and Dean finds the Roosevelt Asylum situated on the outskirts of Rockford in Winchester Sr.'s journal. On arrival, they find out that the asylum was the site of a riot in which many of the staff and patients died in 1964. The brothers enter the asylum to find out why people are still dying, and to put a stop to whatever's doing it.

*Unknown = John Winchester.

Facts & Figures.

Cop. Walter Kelly. [Deceased] Good cop, even keeled. Bright future ahead of him.

Locations.
Roosevelt Asylum. Rockford, Illinois.

Monsters.

Monster of the Week.

Ghosts.

The ghosts of the patients at Roosevelt Asylum, killed in a riot in 1964, have haunted the place ever since. However, unlike most hauntings (especially those who died violent deaths in a mental institution) a majority of the spirits aren't there to cause harm, they simply want people to know the damage that Dr. Sanford Ellicott - the Chief of Staff at Roosevelt - did during his experiments on the patients. All the deaths that occurred after the asylum was closed and the building condemned were the result of Ellicott continuing his work in the afterlife.

Stats.

The Asylum:

7 unconfirmed sightings.
2 Deaths. (4 including Kelly and his wife.)
In 1972 three teenagers broke into the South Wing. Only one survived.
Roosevelt Riot. 1964. Attacked staff, each other. Some deaths - some of the bodies were never recovered, including Sanford Ellicott.
The South Wing housed the hardcases: The Psychotic. Criminally insane.
Room 137 - Dr. Ellicott's office.

Horror Movie Clichés.

Difficulties with electronic equipment (flashlights, cell phones) in the presence of ghosts.
Bloody nose as indicator of possession.
Ghosts causing Murder/Suicide (for no explicable reason.)
Orbs of light showing up on film. (Photographic or video.)**
Super secret documents stashed in a cavity in the wall.
Shower curtains and dripping faucets in an abandoned asylum.

**Technically not a 'Horror Movie Cliché, but it should be given the number of supernatural books/websites which cite this phenomena as being indicative of ghost/spirit activity. Ed.

Quotes.

Sam: What about the Journal? Any leads in there?
Dean: No. Same as last I looked. Nothing I can make out. I love the guy, but I swear he writes like friggin' Yoda.

Dean:You shoved me kind of hard in there, buddy-boy.
Sam: I had to sell it, didn't I? It's method acting.
Dean: Huh?
Sam: Never mind.

Sam: So, whatever's going on, South Wing seems like the heart of it.
Dean: But if kids are spelunking the asylum, why aren't there a tonne more deaths?

Dean: Let me know if you see any dead people, Haley Joel.

Dean: Hey, Sam. Who do you think is the hotter psychic: Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt, or You?
Sam: [whacks Dean]

Dean: Man. Electro shock. Lobotomies. They did some twisted stuff to these people. Kinda like my man, Jack, in Cuckoo's Nest.

Sam: Maybe it's more like Amityville or the Smurl haunting.
Dean: Spirits driving 'em insane. Kinda like my man, Jack, in The Shining.

Dean: See? That attitude right there. That is why I always get the extra cookie.

Gavin: Check this out. Creepy... yet terrifying.
Cat: I thought we were going to a movie.
Gavin: This is even better. It's like we're in a movie.

Dean: Just be careful. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed of spirit is the pissed off spirit of a psycho killer.

Dean: Okay, I got a question for you. You've seen a lot of horror movies, yeah?
Cat: I guess so.
Dean: Do me a favour? Next time you see one: Pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted? Don't go in!

Sam: This girl, did she try to hurt you?
Gavin: What? No... she, ahh...
Sam: She what?
Gavin: She kissed me.
Sam: [blinks] Um. But she didn't try to hurt you?
Gavin: Dude, she kissed me. I'm scarred for life.

Dean: Man, I hope you're right about this.
Sam: ...Yeah, me too.

Cat: So, how do you guys know about all this ghost stuff?
Sam: It's kind of our job.
Cat: Why would anyone want a job like that?
Sam: ... I had a crappy guidance counsellor.
Cat: And, Dean. He's your boss?
Sam: ... No.

Dean: [finds stash of super secret documents behind a panel in the wall] This is why I get paid the big bucks.

Dean: All work and no play makes Dr. Ellicott a very dull boy.

Sanford Ellicott: Don't be afraid. I'm going to make you all better.

Cat: Hey, Gavin?
Gavin: Yeah?
Cat: If we make it out of here alive... we are so breaking up.

Dean: Apparently he [Dr. Ellicott Sr.] was experimenting on his patients. Awful stuff. Makes lobotomies look like a couple of aspirin.
Sam: But it was the patients who rioted...
Dean: Yeah, they were rioting against Dr. Ellicott... Dr. Feelgood was working on some sort of extreme rage therapy. He thought that if he could get his patients to vent their anger then they'd be cured of it. Instead, it only made them worse and worse and angrier and angrier. So, I'm thinking, what if his spirit is doing the same thing. To the cop. To the kids in the seventies. Making them so angry they become homicidal.

Dean: What're you gonna do, Sam? The gun's filled with rock salt, it's not gonna hurt me.
Sam: [shoots Dean] No, but it'll hurt like hell.

Sam: [to Dean] That's the difference between me and you. I have a mind of my own. I'm not pathetic. Like you.

Sam: Do we need to talk about this?
Dean: No. I'm not really in the sharing, caring mood.

[phone rings on the bedside table]
Sam: Dean? [picks up and answers phone] Hello? ... Dad?

Miscellaneous.

John Winchester was in California last Sam and Dean heard from him.

References to: Caleb, Jefferson, and Pastor Jim. (Possible future characters?)

When it comes to their father, Dean is idealistic/naive and Sam's the cynic.

Tag-team ambush/interview tactics. Dean's a jerk, Sam's the indignant bystander who comes to the rescue instantly revealing himself as a sympathetic ear.

Signs outside the Asylum:
KEEP OUT
Condemned Building
No Entry Allowed
Violators Prosecuted
NO TRESPASSING
Property Of The State Of Illinois.

Number of times a light stops working the presence of a ghost: 3.
1. The cop's at the beginning.
2. Dean and Sam's shortly after entering the asylum the first time.
3. Sam's when he goes looking for Dean after the bogus cell call the second time.

This episode is Sam's Skin. Where Dean's emotional turmoil was revealed through the shapeshifter, Sam's resentment of Dean and John is pushed forth by Ellicott's 'treatment'.

This episode marks the first time Sam and Dean are electrocuted.

Although Ellicott is obviously a ghost, his ghostly specter takes on corporeal form once his body is burned.
