My roommates birthday is tomorrow so I decided to decorate the cake I was gonna make for the superbowl as a b-day one.
I didn't want to spend forever on decorations so I used this technique to make the roses/flower:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMmQiZ5xqRQ Its super simple. You basically roll out a small piece of gumpaste into a tube, flatten it out, pull out petals using your fingers, ruffle the edges, and roll it up. Then you fan out the the petals to form a rose. The longer the piece of fondant the larger the flower. I think my longest piece was longer than 10 inches. Made for really full flowers.
Here are all the flowers I made, in rainbow order, ready to go on the cake. (The camera was wonky on a few colors. Next to the blue is actually a really deep purple. And next to the purple it was a burgendy flower, not a pukey brownish one!)
Cake recipe and filling were taken from The Whimsical Bakehouse book. The cake wasn't bad- good flavor but a tad bit too try for me (I think I'm becoming a cake snob...) But the filling what stabilized whipped cream + a crapload of crushed oreos. OMG. I could have eaten an entire bowl of that filling. It was soooooo gooooooood.
Closeup shot. (Again, the color of the flower on the right was much nicer in person)
