So a while ago I read kylakae's post about baby shoes she made.
(
http://community.livejournal.com/cake_decorating/1014489.html) I just about died from the cuteness and thought how fun it would be to make them. Then I realized- our cancer biology administrator is pregnant... what a perfect excuse to make her a cake! After talking with friends, we decided not only to make her cake but throw her a party. So inspiration from kylakae's post ended up in a SURPRISE departmental party attended by ~50 people (who also donated a whopping $380 for her gift!!)
Here's a pic of the cake I made:
The most flattering compliment was by a professor who asked me "Where did you get the cake from?" He was shocked when I told him I made the cake.
It has 9"/6"/3" layers. A pic of me with the cake to put the cake into a size perspective
So how did I come up with the idea?? Not 100% mine. Here is a picture I found online of a color scheme I loved.
Since she was having a girl- I decided to change the colors to white/light pink/pink and use flowers instead of dots. I also needed to incorporate baby shoes. So here's a pic of the baby shoes I wanted to replicate along with a sketch of my plan.
Closeup of the booties. Not nearly as good as Kylakae's inspiration ones, but pretty darn cute! I used the pattern she linked to in the comments of her entry- just slightly modified and shrunk to make them smaller.
Artsy closeup shot (I love my roomate's camera skills). I decided to put flowers on the bottom b/c I still have issues getting my fondant smooth on the bottom.
Action shot: cutting the cake.
And just because it was classic- the reaction to the surprise:
