B-day cake for a lab-mate, commissioned by her boyfriend. He wanted a cake that looked like a hat box with a smaller box on top (in which he could place her gift: a hand-made ring by him)
So here's what I made:
Cake is old fashioned chocolate cake (Cooks Illustrated) with kahlua/chocolate buttercream.
So here's the inspiration drawing- the sketch he made for me. Kinda hard to see but gives you the general idea:
I think I did a pretty good job!! It was my BEST fondant covering ever (super smooth)- for once I was sad I'd have to cover it up :) But I have to admit, after I was done with the cake, I was VERY disappointed b/c it looked kinda ridiculous with all the stripes!! I went a little stripe crazy. It would have been better had I glanced at his drawing before putting on the blue strips and made them less sparse. BUT after the bow and box were placed on the cake it looked much better.
