Mice probs

I'm approaching a dozen mouse sightings within the past month.  I told my landlord about the first time and he handed out two glue traps.  A solid three weeks later, we caught a mouse.  However, the mice that are still hanging around are getting pretty bold.  One ran across my foot while I was doing dishes the other night.  The landlord handed out ( Read more... )

Those little shits can squeeze through the tiniest danged holes. Since you especially see them around the radiator, get some steel wool and pack it into the hole where the radiator pipes come out. Since you don't have cats (and I'm going to guess no small children as well), get poison boxes and put those along baseboards and under the edges of counters where you've seen mice or droppings.

Also, keep hounding your landlord about the repeated sightings and document. And then look into city building codes regarding extermination. I'm fairly certain that there's a requirement - not just a suggestion - that he contact professionals after a certain point.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but as a new Chicagoan - is there a tenant bill of rights that the original poster could pull out to get some action from the landlord? We have one in Seattle, but maybe that's not so common as I thought?

Chicago has the RLTO, but the rules are different for owner occupied buildings of less than 6 units, which it sounds like this is.

Oh god, rats. Go to a hardware store and get some rat poison, the glue traps are less effective. Line the walls with the poison and yeah, be prepared for finding dead mice, though. *shudder* Sorry, I'm traumatized as shit about rats because of a similar situation.

We had a mouse problem last year thanks to the neighbor that lives downstairs. We found these traps at strak and van till and baited them with a plain chocolate m&m (they love chocolate by the way). Good luck.

I grew up in a subdivision surrounded by farm land and forest preserve. This meant that every autumn when it got cold, we got mice ( ... )

I was just going to suggest this - if you can borrow a cat, or maybe even a dog, you might get yourself some temporary relief.

Yeah I had good luck with a spring trap and peanut butter. Caught the mouse on the first day I set it out.
Place the traps right by the holes near the radiator(thats where I heard the mouse at 4am every day in my bedroom knawing on the wall!! and it worked for me)

We once put out those traps that have a cover on them so you don't actually see the dead mouse (just the tail and the fact that the trap lever is sprung). We didn't even bait the trap but we had a dead mouse in there the next day. I guess the mouse's curiosity about what was in that dark hole got the better of him.

How many units are in the building? Owner occupied buildings with 6 or less units are not covered by the RLTO. If you are covered by the RLTO, you should be able to get the Tenant's Union involved - I'm pretty sure mice are a habitability issue.
