From NOLA to Chicago in one month or less!

Checked the memories but couldn't find any "which area should I live?!?" questions that weren't from singles or any that actually recommended south of the city neighborhoods or townships.

The hubs and I got the news today that we are likely moving to the Chicago area in February.  Hubs will be working in Hammond, IN. I will be starting classes at a local public university in the fall (likely UIC). Any suggestions on areas where I should be looking for housing (for rent or sale). We're a family of 3 with a four year old, and another coming in June. Safety, family friendliness, school district and convenience (of a daily commute south) are paramount. Walkable amenities (restaurants/coffee/parks) are a bonus. Price is certainly a consideration (1000/mo or less until we find something to buy), but we'll start with that. We both have cars so public transit is not an issue, just a bonus if its close. Where are all the new family, struggling middle class folks? Any suggestions?
