So, like a lot of posters here, I'm new to Chicago. Was enjoying my initial explorations into the city, but since school has started I'm finding myself short on time to really get out and go hunting for good times. I'm also having a hard time knowing when I'm going to have a little time to get out, which makes it really difficult to make plans. I'd like to take advantage of the schedule windows I do get though, and get out and meet the neighbors. So I'm wondering where the best places to do this are. I'm living off of Damen between Chicago and Division. I think that puts me in East Village. Division seems to really hop at night with bars and restaurants, but I wonder if they aren't maybe a little too hip and trendy for a girl to walk in by herself and get to really talk to folks. Sometimes the bars off the beaten path are best for that kind of thing, and I'd love to get some recommendations. I also tried to show up for a Yoga beginner's night at Spanda, but they seem to no longer be in business. I'm interested in more than just the bars. So where are the friendliest local spots? Where are the best spots to go on a whim? What are your East Village favorites?
