I spent TWO HOURS snipping dates and candied fruits today. Fruitcake cookies are awesome, but I am in a bit of pain right now.
Going straight from a mid-1980's compilation movie (meaning one where the audience can go in knowing nothing of the franchise, and come out having learned (more or less) what happened during half a year's worth of TV episodes) to a mid-1990's Shounen Jump feature was a bit jarring. First the animation is much, much better -- no explosion shortcuts are employed as in Curse of the Blood Rubies -- and there is an independent story for Dragon Ball Z's last movie. Granted, the fact that SJ movies are not allowed to do anything that would impact the TV series (say, kill off a character) usually makes them not very entertaining. But this one actually does successfully have a story that was interesting and entertaining. Possibly the best of the DBZ movies, in fact.
It starts with this weird old guy is threatening to jump off Tokyo Tower a building. Great Saiyaman #1 and #2 (Gohan and Videl) save him, and then listen to his tale of woe: his music box won't open, which would release the great hero Tapion. Videl cracked me up, because she just did not care about the guy's story, and also wanted to get back to school.
Taking the story to the larger groups of characters on the show, they all agree to use the dragon balls to open the music box (LOL, poor Shen Long). Tapion emerges, essentially screams "What have you done?!" and runs off to an abandoned factory. Trunks has taken a shine to him (as he is jealous of Goten having a big brother), and eventually befriends the angst-ridden warrior. Meanwhile, the legs and torso of a huge monster are rampaging around West City....
I think one of the things I liked the most about this movie was that the focus wasn't on Goku. Even in movie 10, where Goku is dead, Brolli's rage is completely focused on "Kakarrot!" and Goku even shows up to defeat him. The focus in this movie is on Tapion, which is refreshing.
Fun movie! Next time will be a review for something that I have heard isn't so fun. :c
