Ryo squinted his eyes shut even though they already are through the process of waking up from his deep sleep. Tossing his head to the side, he felt his head came in contact with something. He opened his eyes slowly adjusting to his surroundings.

Yep, he knew where he was.

Sleeping soundly next to him was the brunette he had come to love so much since he first saw the boy. Ryo thought this character was one precious person even during the time he had Kame, but that was another story.

Uchi was hesitant at first when Ryo told him about his feelings. The older boy had then given up chasing the other boy until one day Uchi appeared in his doorstep in a tipsy state.

So tipsy that they both fell together into the web of lust.

-

“What do you think Kame would have said now that you haven’t been home for almost a week?” Uchi asked quietly as he drew small circles around the flat stomach of Ryo.

Ryo stared at the ceiling, blowing the smoke through his nose. “What do you think?”

Uchi stopped his movements and sat up straight, pulling Ryo’s face to face him.

“We should really stop this. Kame is a very vulnerable person.”

Ryo stared back into the other’s eyes, reflecting the obvious guilt. “I know.” He flicked off the light of his cigarette and showered Uchi with kisses.

“Kame loves you.” Uchi said.

Ryo pushed his tongue into Uchi’s mouth and sucked the life out of the other, they both moaned at the kiss that frees all the totaled up longing during the times they missed each other.

“You love me too.” Ryo retorted.

-

Kame was drinking his milk when he was suddenly approached by a thug-faced baldy he recognized as one of his classmates.

“Tanaka-san…”

Koki’s face was twisted with fury and his eyes looked as if he was about to cut Kame into tiny pieces and fry the other with extra virgin olive oil.

He came closer to Kame until their faces were only inches apart.

“KAMENASHI KAZUYA!” Koki screamed so loud at Kame that the other had to throw his head back from the impact of the sharp - yet erotic - voice.

All heads from the cafeteria turned to look at the pair.

Koki breathed so loud that Kame thought he looked like one of the animated dragons that breathe out fire from the nose.

“Yes?” Kame gulped.

Koki was wearing a red cap pulled backward, a checkered jacket with a normal white T-shirt underneath and three quarter pants. The huge sneakers and the heavy and blinding blings around his neck was enough to label Koki a thug. No, a high classed one as Kame noticed that every piece of item on the other was branded.

Koki turned to a few heads still watching worriedly from other tables. “What are the lots of you looking at?”

Immediately the heads were back into facing their own business.

Koki pulled a chair next to Kame and sat down noisily - Kame had to blame the blings.

The gangster looked at Kame carefully, almost scrutinizing every bit of Kame’s face from the perfect eyebrows until the lips that clamped onto a straw.

“My name is Tanaka Koki.” Kame almost fell from his chair, hearing the soft tone and the somehow erotic voice from Koki. The voice and the face totally contradict, Kame thought.

“Hi?” Kame couldn’t form a more appropriate reply than this.

Koki’s eyes grew wide. “Hand!” He growled and Kame hurriedly extended a hand to which Koki took and shook with a smile that left two thick lines on his eyes.

Kame was suddenly reminded of the eyes of Taguchi Junnosuke from Music course when the latter had smiled.

“We will be friends from now on! No objection!” Koki said loudly.

Kame thought this guy was funny and has a really weird way of making friends. “Okay, Koki.” Kame saw how Koki blushed when the latter was called with his first name.

-

“A thugface like that could blush?” Jin snickered at the same time he wondered what this Tanaka Koki person would look like.

Kame chuckled at Jin’s comment. “Don’t be mean! He’s my friend.”

“You have quite a taste in friends, Kame-chan.”

Kame took the cocktail shaker and opened it. “His face was written ‘I’ll murder you if you say No’ so how can you expect me to reject? I didn’t want to die young.” He poured the pink liquid originally on his hand into the shaker and closed the divider.

**** “I hate people who did that. It's effing irritating.” Jin made a face.

“I think it's fine if the guy is really nice,” Kame said and he was about to shake the steel shaker before it was snatched away from his hands by Jin.

“You a music person?” Jin asked and paid no attention to Kame’s disbelieving face but started shaking the shaker.

“Quite.” Kame was amazed by Jin’s movements. The older boy can do it with his face looking so effortless and he was fast, really fast.

Jin opened the shaker and poured the product on a glass. “I shake so well, don’t I?” He threw a wink at Kame.

Kame thought he heard something familiar when Jin was shaking but brushed off that thought as he thought it was impossible a random shake of cocktail could sound like a beat from his favourite song. He held back the urge to roll his eyes. “What else can I say?”

“It’s my friend.” Jin fished his phone out from his pocket that was actually ringing with the beat of music Kame heard. He chuckled and whispered to Kame, "Yamashita Tomohisa. Heard of him?"

Judging from Kame’s eyes widen in admiration, Jin thought he should have assumed with no uncertainty that his best friend has to be a major pop singing sensation in Japan.

“The Yamashita Tomohisa?” Kame asked a little too loudly.

Jin nodded.

“Oh my god I love him! I’m a super huge fan! He writes really good - no, godly music and his voice is just… argh, I can’t explain. He’s amazing.” Kame was talking like a fangirl - in this case, a fanboy, Jin noticed and the younger boy was smiling so wide when he explained how he first heard of Yamashita from the radio and then went to search up all the songs the superstar sang before buying the singles and the first album with his hard-earned money as a temporary librarian in his hometown.

When Kame learned about Yamashita’s acting, the cocktail maker even took extra part time jobs to earn more money in hopes to buy every drama with the latter in it. Even as cameo in an episode, Kame wouldn’t think twice before buying the one low-rated drama.

“I listen to his songs almost every single day then I stopped… when I started dating Ryo.” Kame’s voice turned hopeless.

“I don’t know why but Ryo seemed to hate Yamashita. He lets me listen to his songs but only when he’s not around. Says he hated Yamashita’s voice. He wouldn’t tell me why though.” Kame poured a black liquid into a light blue solution.

Jin seemed to stare away as he listened to the younger boy. Quietly he whispered, “I know why.”

Kame has sensitive ears, however. “You do?” ****

Jin scratched his head. How should he start his story when he wasn’t even sure whether he should tell it or not in the first place?

“We were best friends,” Jin grinned at the awestricken face so close to his - Kame is really one cute fan and Yamapi ought to count himself lucky - as he continued, “Yamapi was the nickname Ryo-chan and I came up for him.”

“The three of us were really close buddies. We were from the same junior school until we graduated from Kurogin High together - well, at least Ryo-chan and I did. There was another person, Shirota Yu, but we’ll go to that some other time.”

Kame nodded and listened willingly.

“Yamapi wanted to be a star with big dreams but Ryo-chan and I had nothing but girls on our minds that time. Pi worked hard to achieve his dreams; everyday he would go for private training to train his voice and his mother who was very supportive in whatever he does, decided to enroll him into a school of performing arts. When he told us he was going to transfer to that school, Ryo-chan was the first who couldn’t take it.”

“Ryo-chan and Pi got into a fight, mostly because Ryo-chan didn’t want him to go but used the reason of betraying our friendship to make Pi feel guilty so that he would change his mind.”

“I couldn’t do anything but only watched as the commenced in a somewhat lousy fist fight. Thinking back, Pi wasn’t really a fist person.” Jin chuckled at the memory of Yamashita who was almost twice the size of Ryo but couldn’t throw even a punch at the breakneck Ryo.

“Doesn’t it bother you as well? The fact that your best friend is leaving…” Kame interrupted.

Jin fixed his gaze on Kame. He remembered it so well that he himself had asked his own reflection the same damn question.

“Will it sound selfish of me to say that it didn’t?” Jin’s expression was solemn as he asked the younger boy.

The cocktail maker thought for awhile and shook his head.

Jin nodded. “I thought so too. It’s his life, isn’t it? Who am I, a mere friend to stop him? I may be his best friend but I don’t feed him, I don’t feed his family and I’m only a student who shared half of his childhood with.”

“But Ryo-chan didn’t see that.”

“Didn’t you try talking sense into Ryo?”

Jin shook his head and scoffed. “Have you tried talking sense into Ryo when his eyes were blinded by thick rage?”

Kame then seemed to be able to deduce an answer from his own question. What a stupid question to ask.

“Yup, so that’s why I only stood there and watched. I sat down, actually. It was a long fight. The longest in our history of friendship.”

“Yamapi insisted on leaving anyway and Ryo-chan got so mad that he declared the end of their friendship.”

There was silence as Jin recollected his memories on that evening when the sun was about to set. The three of them were on the rooftop of their high school. Ryo and Yamapi laid down on the concrete ground while Jin sat leaning on the wall, his face a shade of yellow from the setting sun.

Kame stared at his own fingers, deep in absolute thought but he was first to break the silence - the loud music of the club was still banging, however - between them.

“Are you still friends with Yamashita?”

“Of course. I wasn’t involved in that dumbass declaration. I was a rational kid, not that I’m saying Ryo-chan isn’t but ah - you get it, right?” Jin smiled apologetically.

“Don’t worry, I do.”

“Pi is actually going to come over anytime this week.”

Kame couldn’t believe his ears. “Oh my god, you’re joking!” Jin burst into laughter at the fanboy Kame again. Kame was almost flailing around like he had wings replaced his arms, Jin could swear it.

“I’m not. He told me he was on tour and he just got back last week.”

Kame nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, yes. He started touring around Asia since last month. Poor boy, he must be really beat after the tour. He was astounding, really, to be able to sing to so many of his fans.”

“Pi must be really happy to have a fan like you.” Jin commented.

Kame blushed shyly and he was suddenly reminded of the reason he stood behind the counter. “Ah, I’m supposed to work here. What am I doing?!” He hurried away from Jin and started mixing a few orders written on post-its stuck on his station.

Jin smiled away watching the hardworking boy cutting skillfully the fruits.

-

‘Where are you now? I missed you.’

Kame read the two sentences again and again. For almost a week after he hadn’t heard about his boyfriend - Kame wasn’t even sure if it was a correct calling for Ryo right now - tonight Ryo had finally sent him a text.

Kame had always replied texts, especially the ones he received from Ryo. This time, however, he didn’t feel like following his usual pattern.

Flipping off his phone, he walked along the quiet street which took quite long to reach his apartment - by feet it’s far anyway. Kame never wished he had a car. The thought of gas money and environmental deterioration - Kame knew there was no helping Earth anyway no matter what the humans are trying to do now to save it - was another excuse other than him being lazy and an indoor person.

Stopping next to him abruptly with an ostentatious sound of a honk was a red Toyota sports car. The window winded down revealing his grinning boss.

“Get in, Kazu-chan. I’ll take you home.”

Kame reluctantly slipped into the passenger seat when the car door was automatically opened for him. “I thought you lived the other side - “

“Aw, come on. Can’t a boss be considerate to see his favourite staff home safely?” Jin tried to make up an excuse to cover the fact that he was unsatisfied with Kame leaving the club without saying goodbye to him.

Kame nodded and blushed beautifully. The scent of expensive cigarette smoke and heavy alcohol Kame got pretty accustomed to since two days ago lingered inside the vehicle.

“It’s dangerous to walk alone in an empty street at night. Why don’t you drive?” Jin asked casually.

Kame shook his head. “Nah, I hated to own a car.”

“You do have your licence, yes?”

“I do. It’s just that I don’t prefer having a car of my own. I like to drive but owning a car costs too much what with the fuel and the worry I’d have of it getting scratches and the repair. It’s too much trouble.” Kame said.

Jin let out a low chortle. Kame is one strange but adorable guy. Jin emphasized the word ‘guy’ in his mind.

“Do you want to come inside for something?” Kame thought he should be polite with an invitation as Jin had been really sweet to drive him home at 5:15 a.m. in the morning.

Jin couldn’t be gladder with the offer. “Oh okay.” He replied with excitement disguised in a somehow calmed tone.

He parked the car into the empty parking spot which was Kame’s and they both took the elevator up to the eleventh floor.

Jin took off his shoes behind the door inside the apartment while Kame hurried to check the fridge if there was any beverage left to offer the older man.

He sat down on the brown couch and almost melted in the softness of the material. “Shit, this couch is super comfortable!”

“Bought it at Ikea’s. Do a double-flip on it, if you feel like.”

Jin relaxed his head on the fluffy square pillow as he examined the place. It was nothing like he imagined. He thought Kame would have been living in a clean and organized household but clearly it had to be the opposite as books were arranged as if in a mosaic project on the floor, the DVDs were stacked unsteadily in three feet tall and clothes were covering almost every furniture of the room.

This feels like home for Jin.

“Sorry, I ran out of drinks except sky juice. Would you care for this I made?” Kame handed the glass of fizzy concoction.

Jin took the drink gladly and quickly filled his throat.

“What’s this?”

Kame’s face became panicked. “Why? What does it tastes like?”

Jin gulped and frowned. “This… this…”

Kame scooted closer. “Yes? Yes?”

Jin, realizing the distance closing between them, decided to tease Kame further. “Tastes like…”

“Yeah?” Kame was inches away from Jin’s face, so close Jin could smell Kame’s breath of lemon and vanilla orange mixed.
Jin smirked and placed a chaste kiss on Kame’s lips. “Tastes like you.”

The younger boy was conscious of the happening all too late and quickly pulled backwards, falling from the couch and landed on the floor as his eyes still grew wide stared up at Jin.

When Jin tried to pull him up with his hand reaching forward, Kame clumsily stood up and as soon as he did, the door to his apartment opened.

“Kame…” Ryo stood there looking back and forth at the two men.

He closed the door and sauntered to the frozen two. “Jin, what are you doing here?”

Kame composed himself from his aghast. “I invited him in.”

Ryo turned to Kame. “You did? At 5:30 a.m.?”

The thought of his lover bringing someone else home other than himself bores questions in his mind especially when it’s 5:30 a.m.

“Where were you? I came here last night - well, hours ago, and you weren’t here. I waited until midnight.”

Kame thought that was exactly what Ryo would have done so he hadn’t prepared any lies or excuses like he did for the Yamapi live concert months ago, instead he opted to tell him the truth this time. There was something else he wanted to confront his boyfriend about but with Jin around, Kame thought it wasn’t appropriate in addition with the fact that he was dog tired.

“I was working at Jin’s club.” Kame said.

Ryo’s voice rose when he heard the younger boy’s reply. “You worked in a club?” He turned to Jin, who was already on his feet.

“Uh, yeah. He’s sort of my new cocktail maker.”

Jin sensed the tensed atmosphere then. This doesn’t concerns him and he should go.

“I think I’ll just go home. Let’s catch up sometime, Ryo-chan.” Jin stepped his way trampling on the books.

“See ya, Kame.” Jin waved and closed the door on his way out.

There was silence for awhile. But Kame knew it was the calm before the storm. Nishikido Ryo wasn’t a very patient person.

“Did you get my text?” Ryo sat down on the couch right where Jin had sat earlier.

“Yes.” Kame couldn’t keep his eye contact with Ryo. He was afraid what he would see in those eyes. Distraction was what he needed so he picked up the clothes lying around in the room, forgetting that Jin was here earlier and that he should have been ashamed of his own mess.

“I didn’t know you knew how to make cocktails.” It sounded like an accuse.

“I didn’t know when you would come home either.” Kame retorted simply.

Something flipped inside Ryo. He was aware of his own mistakes and he simply hasn’t found the solution to his tangled relationships. Not yet.

He approached the younger boy from the back and wrapped his arms around the other’s waist. “I’m sorry.”

That one word and the thick guilt in his voice caused almost three quarters of Kame’s enraged nerves to disappear. He’d seen this coming: he really couldn’t be mad at his boyfriend for a long time.

“You’re sorry…?”

Ryo tilted Kame’s face and kissed him fully on the lips he missed so much.

“I’m sorry.”

Somehow, when Ryo’s lips touched his own, Kame didn’t feel anything he used to feel anymore.
