> And I am still not convinced that Macs are better.
Well, now that they're just another flavour of BSD, with KDE modified to more closely resemble the original Lisa interface, they are :) Well, better than Windows, anyway. Other *NIX systems still outclass it everywhichway.
I've found the number of security issues to come down the pipe for MacOS simultaneously amusing and horrifying to no end (among the UNIX systems I'm responsible for at work are some 15 MacOS X systems). For instance, by default, MacOS' install of sudo does NOT lock itself to a specific terminal instance, yet still gives a full 15 second window where no password is required. Virii that take advantage of this bighuge hole are already floating in the wild.
Still more secure than Windows.
To that end, I have similr conversations with many of my calls to my ISP's tech support whenever there's a network issue.
Tech: Open up IE... Me: I'm running Solaris. Tech: Uuuhhh... Is that a Mac thing? IE is now available for Mac- Me: No, Solaris. 64-bit OS that runs on SPARCs. Tech: Uh... uh... is that a Dell, or Compaq, or... Me: No, It's Sun. You know, The Guys Who Make Java(tm)? Right. So open a web browser. Moving along. Tech: Umm, my directions only cover IE. Me: I'll manage. MOVING ALONG.
It's not easy for us non-MicroSoft users. Anymore, I just pretend I'm using IE, or have shut down/restart the system when instructed to do so.
Heh, thanks for the info. I just never got to know Macs. I know PCs pretty well, at least, much more in depth than I know Macs. But it was kind of hard at school because there was a surplus of Macs and not all that many PCs. ^_^
Depending on when you were in school, they may or may not have been UNIX-based. UNIX-based MacOS X was released in 2000, and only works on G4-based Macs and up. Prior to that, they were still (loosley) based on the original Xerox Parc OS, the non-UNIX style OS that most people still think of when they think Mac.
Could have been. I graduated at the end of last year. They were nice comps. I am just used to PCs. Had a hard time transferring files. I always had to find a PC or wait for a PC so my floppies would work.
Zip Disk?! I was thinking of something a little less proprietary, a littl less crappy, and a bit more robust. And portable. Like CD-R*, which has been affordably inexpensive for some time now; or perhaps USB mass storage devices, which have also been remarkably affordable for some years now and getting ever more affordable. Heck, just about every USB device doubles as a mass storage device anymore, and even small ones hold many times more than a floppy.
Heh, I'm sure Chibirat loves us having this long, drawn-out discussion in her LJ entry here :)
* - not CD-RW, though. That medium has proven itself to be not only less than reliable, but also rather finicky about what drives can even read it, and remains remarkably expensive compared to CD-R's.
Yeah, my compy won't let me burn stuff to CD at the moment. It's being punky. I used to burn stuff all the time. I need to talk to someone about my CD drive. And my DVD drive. I think it might be a driver problem, actually, because it gets all funky and skippy and the sound doesn't match the visual.
Heh, I don't think T would mind. If she does, she can just tell us to go away. ^__^ *stalks T*
You know though? Macs bug me. They have no double mouse button. And don't tell me there are ways to do the same thing on macs, because I know there are. You can't cut and paste as easily, and for a writer, that's paramount.
I have heard hewlett packards are worse than dells. So what would you recommend?

Ah, the time of my life when I had a zip disk... That was nice. Now, no more zipdrive. *sigh*
