I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, even though I made a lot of dumb mistakes (Grunt's colors are all fudged, and Wrex is way over-painted) that I'm too lazy to go back and fix. This was my "test" side, so I chose designs that I didn't like as much. Despite my animu livejournal name (I signed up when I was in high school and way into that stuff) I'm actually pretty bad at drawing chibis, so I went for a wholesale tokidoki ripoff homage (which is much harder to draw than one might imagine...).
Rough mockup of the lineart placement, made in photoshop. Useful for figuring out the scale, but I think I still made them too small...oh well.
How the lineart actually turned out on the shoe. I printed out the scaled design and used transfer paper, then inked over it. One of the bad things I figured out as I was starting was that the grain of the canvas is actually pretty rough, so it made getting smooth, clean lines with a pen/marker almost impossible. Did some test painting on Ashley's face, just to see how opaque the paint was.
