Previous Memories:
Continued Memory,
First Memory "Hmm... is it that idiot who can't seem to read the atmosphere?" Takaki guessed, laughing as he heard Hikaru trying to protest only to be stopped by Inoo.
Takaki felt the warm hands leave his eyes and the boy slipping into the seat in front of him.
"Yabu-kun..." Takaki murmured, smiling at the said person.
"Where's Arioka-kun?" Yabu asked slowly.
Takaki tried to not frown. He had never told anyone else, not even Yabu about what happened years ago. It wasn't something he could simply tell to his friends. It felt more of a personal thing between Daiki and him and no one else could interfere because that would make things more complicated. But somehow, he had this inkling that Yabu knew. Why? Takaki couldn't exactly explain it since it was more of an intuition.
"I dunno..." he answered. "But we did walk together to school," Takaki added, grinning.
"Dai-chan is with his girlfriend," Inoo said, sliding into his chair to the left of Takaki.
Takaki's heart fell when he heard this. "G-girlf-friend...?" his voice cracked in disbelief. Many questions rushed through his head at once. Why hadn't he heard of this? Why hadn't he noticed? Most importantly, who was this girl???
Hikaru nodded, standing right in front of Inoo. "Didn't you know? They've been going since a week ago."
Inoo pushed Hikaru to the side. "Move your butt, you're blocking my view."
"From what?" Hikaru purposely shook his butt in front of Inoo even more. Inoo sighed, rolling his eyes and leaned back against his chair.
Takaki had blocked out everything that was happening around him. He still couldn't believe it. And he could feel his heart breaking and his eyes becoming watery.
"Takaki... are you okay?"
He turned his head to source of the voice, seeing Yabu with eyes full of concern. Takaki's lips were trembling as he tried to hold back his tears. He knew that they were bound to come out soon so he stood up, ready to leave abruptly.
But Yabu had grabbed his wrist, leading him out the classroom instead.
"Eh? Where are you guys going?" Hikaru called out with a confused look. "Class is gonna start soon!"
"We'll be back. We just need to go to the infirmary for something," Yabu answered, his hold tightening on Takaki.
Takaki merely sniffled and covered his eyes with a sleeve, tears soaking the cotton material. "I'm s-"
"Don't talk," Yabu commanded.
Takaki closed his mouth and felt Yabu stopping, grab a hold of his shoulders and pushed him to sit down on a bench.
"Let me see your face," Yabu said with a gentle, soothing voice.
He shook his head and finally let his arms fall to his sides after a while. Yabu dabbed a tissue on Takaki's face, removing the falling tears.
Takaki liked this about Yabu. He never asked or tried to pry into his business. Yabu respected his privacy and waited patiently for Takaki to say anything if he wanted to. He gave him what he needed, someone Takaki could rely on, someone he could show his vulnerable side to. Takaki choked back a sob and swallowed hard, his mind going back to the news about Daiki. He knew that he shouldn't be affected but couldn't help but feel this way. Somehow, this hit him harder than he expected.
Yabu simply sat beside him, holding his hand for reassurance. He didn't need to say anything. The words were already clear, "I'll always be here for you."
Takaki leaned his head against Yabu's shoulders. Sure it wasn't the best pillow but Yabu's presence was all that mattered. Takaki let out a hiccup and sniffled once more, crying in Yabu's arms and feeling the warm hand on his hair.
Little did he know that Daiki was really worried about his absence, rushing over to the infirmary only to halt, seeing the intimate scene. Daiki turned away at the sight and walked away with unreadable eyes.
