As I walked into what might be considered the best South Lake Union coffee shop, KaPow Coffee, I was looking for a morning caffine fix and some breakfast. I didn't expect to find "Ride the S.L.U.T" shirts hanging on the wall in a variety of colors. What is the S.L.U.T.? It's the new streetcar that the city is installing. Offically names the South Lake Untion Streecar, it was origianlly called the South Lake Untion Trolly, until the city council discovered exactly what the acronym spelled.
Anyone who rides Seattle public transit can tell you it's the kind of blunder they expect. Somedays riding the bus is like wrestling a buttered snake. Other days it's like being in love. Today, my commute was smack in the middle. The bus was crowded, and yet I caught one early enough that I could get onto an early connection and have enough time before work to walk to a coffee shop and get a latte and stare at the S.L.U.T. shirts.
If I had the cash for it, I might have walked out of Kapow with a t-shirt this morning (they only take cash for the shirts), but I did get a wonderful gingerbread latte and a pumkin muffin and a smile. Partly for the irrevernt humor that Seattlites seem to share, and partly for the stupidity of the city planners. I still made it to work with time to spare.
