I don't really understand the challenge. Is the person actually, physically a ship? Or are they just tied to the ship? Or what?

I believe it can be either way. The essential idea is a brainship, only less specific about how they got into that general state (because a, you can be more creative, and b, Anne McCaffery has the *scary* lawyers). So, they may not be completely the ship, but they definitely aren't a human being capable of hugging, whistling, looking you in the eye, etc.. Unless there's a hologram. In which case, they can look you in the eye and whistle, but still not hug.

Actually, I think the first one was more hellworthy than the second. It definately pushed the "ohgodpleaseno, peering through the fingers to see the screen" button more than the second.
