I am posting this early since I probably going to relax on Monday.
Yesterday (May 25, 2006) my work had a BBQ setup, and we had a party. One of the "contest" was to write "What does Memorial Day means to me?" I didn't enter because I'm a first generation American so I didn't lose family in the war.... but after hearing a couple I think I can come up with something that is dear to me.
What does Memorial Day means to me?
It is another vacation day that we get during our days at work, but it is so much more than that. It is a day of rememberance of the people who died for a cause that ALLOWS us to have a vacation day such as this. We celebrate the living vet on Veteran's Day, but today we celebrate and be thankful for the Soldiers who gave up their lives to give us the freedom today. There are many times that we takes thing for granted and sometimes the American people takes their freedom for granted. Being a first generation American, my parents tell me the hardship of living in other country compare to America. We have almost infinite choice only if we apply ourselves. Sure there will be obstacles within the system, but in any systen within the U.S. you can actually overcome unlike other countries. Why? because the people before us establish that freedom and that right for us. Those are the people who we should remember and be thankful hence "Memorial Day"
But we don't have to be sad. In many cultures people throw parties to celebrate passing of love one and that is what we should do today. We celebrate the memories of the people before us and enjoy the freedom that we have :) so happy Memorial Days everyone.
