Well, this is the way I simply did it...
BUT WAIT! there's a buttonhole stitch! Which is a cousin to the blanket stitch! Well, you learn new things every day.
So apparently, instead of using like an overcast stitch all the way around, you use a buttonhole stitch! aaaaaaaah makes sense
