Title: Released - Chapter 5
Author: Chiazu
Rating: R
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Paring: Hotch/Reid
Disclaimer: They're just my puppets. My lovely, lovely puppets.
Author's Note: This prompt was posted in the IKY'dU forum by vanessasquest  and she's letting me fill it for her: I was just watching Sex, Birth, Death... and I was wondering if there isn't any fanfic out there about the kid coming back later (you know after a couple years cultivated in a psych ward) if someone would be willing to write a piece about that and make it Hotch/Reid Reid-centric?

Chapter 5: Special shout out to cmali for helping me. Writer's block is such a bitch.

Summary: Reid - "What if next time he kills somebody?" Gideon - "Then you catch him."

The police station was hectic. Not surprising since they were in Washington D.C. after all; big city cops always had a case to work on. In fact Reid expected to see multiple street cops and detectives running around, trying to solve whatever case it was they were working on. He even  expected to see a few to stop working and stare at the newly arrived FBI barging into their turf. The last thing he expected to see was Steyer waiting for them in the room that had been set up for the team. Except the tinge of grey in her hair, the congresswomen looked exactly the same as when Reid last saw her near four years ago.

"Agent Hotchner," Steyer stood from her chair shook Hotch's hand, giving a nod to the rest of the team, "I'm glad to see you took on the case. When I read about a third woman being killed the same way as the other, I thought it best to bring you in. I hope you're able to catch the man who is doing this. We can hardly stand for another serial killer in the country's capital. Now if you will excuse me, I have an appointment." With that the congresswomen left the room, escorted by her guards, leaving everyone in dumbfounded.

Just seconds later a young man came into the room, and began shaking everyone's hands as he introduced himself. "Hello, I'm Dave Robinson, the detective in charge of the case." Hotch introduced everyone in the usual fashion. Robinson was middle aged, his light brown hair beginning to grey and face showing signs of winkles. The stress of his job had clearly worn him down over the years. Robinson handed over a box of files, claiming it was all they had on the case so far. Morgan commented on on little evidence Robinson had given.  "Think he's holding out on us?"

"Could be." Rossi stated, somewhat bitter, "Most LEOs don't like it when we show up."

"I highly doubt he is." Reid offered quickly, looking through one of the files, "From what we've seen so far, the UnSub has been careful not to get seen taking the women or dropping off the bodies. This might just be everything they have, even if it's not a lot."

"Reid is right," Hotch spoke as he put down the file he had been looking at, "This UnSub knows what he is doing, and we can't offered for the LEOs thinking we don't trust them." Everyone nodded in silent agreement. "Okay, Rossi and Morgan, go to the morgue see what you can find out about Jane Doe. Prentiss and I will go talk to Emma Watson's parents. Reid, you stay here and look through the files. See if you can find something Robinson missed."

With that, the pairs split accordingly and left Reid alone. He picked up the file of Emma Watson, the latest abductee, and began reading through it.

~

She has the most beautiful golden, brown hair. I can tell by the way it feels that is it natural. It is soft and luxurious. Not something you can get from a bottle. I can't help but to run my finger through it. Unsurprisingly, Emma flinches at my touch. I tell her not to worry. I won't do anything to her; but still, she cries scared tears. They make her chocolate brown eyes puffy and red. I know once she calms down, her eyes will be as beautiful as they were just hours ago.

I grab a tissue to wipe her nose, I can't stand to see the mucus running from it. Again Emma flinches, but nearly as bad as last time. This time she seems thankful. This time at least. I comment about how lovely she looks. Tell her she has a natural beauty, no need to waste money on make-up. Make-up only gives people a false image. I like that she doesn't use any. I hear her mumble something about sensitive skin, so I tell her skin is perfect.

Emma has stopped looking at me now, opting to look at the ground instead. I bring out the try of food and water I brought for her, placing it next to her. She waited patiently for me to untie before grabbing the sandwich hastily. I watch as she quickly consumes the sandwich before doing anything else. For a moment, after she has had some water, Emma looks at me. As though she is trying to understand a math problem. Instead voicing her thoughts though, she decided to finish her meal. Perhaps she is afraid I won't let her eat if she says something. As I sit and watch Emma eat, I wonder why someone like her would work in a bar. I am tempted to ask her, but prefer to just watch instead. She most have a good reason to work in such a horrible place.

Once she has finished everything, I move to once again tie her to the wall. Deep down, I wanted to leave Emma untied. Allow her to walk around the room and lay down in the bed. But I had no way of locking the door yet. Perhaps I should buy a dead lock. That way I could leave her untied. Emma would like that, I think. At least then she wouldn't have to sit up against the hard wall constantly while I was away. But there's a chance she could try to attack me as I came into the room. I make a mental note to stop by Home Depot after work today.

I need to get back to work. My lunch break is almost over, and I don't want to get in trouble for being late. My curiosity gets the better of me though. I don't understand why someone like Emma would work in such awful place. I look at her for a moment before speaking. "Why do you work in such a horrible place?" She is confused, doesn't quite understand the question. "Its dirty, unkempt, and the men have something to be left desired."

Emma looks at me with those chocolate brown eyes, not as puffy or red as they had been moment ago, a mixture of sadness and nostalgia on her face. "It was my father's bar." I don't need to ask anymore, knowing more about her from those five words than I could have thought possible. I stand to leave, bushing the hair from Emma's face before turning around.

"Why are you doing this?" I stop mid step, and back towards Emma. Her face was seemed to mirror my previous curiosity. I take a moment to think, confused. Why am I doing this? That's something the doctors have trying to understand as well. I step back towards Emma, crouching in front of her. "Why do you want to know?"

"Because you asked about my job. It's only fair you answer my question now." Her response was quick, as though she had been prepared for my question. This last few moment spent with Emma had taught me more about her than all those days spent with the others. Emma was far different from the others, and that made me happy. I smiled a small smile, causing Emma to become more confused.
"I don't know know why. Something just compels me to." I watch her face in response to my answer to my answer. I can tell she doesn't quite believe me. I stand back up absentmindedly brushing dust from the bottom of my pants. "You don't have to believe me, but it is the truth." I turn to leave once again, set on really leaving this time. "I'll be back tomorrow." I step out of the room, closing the door behind me. I look at my watch, realizing I would be a few minutes late back. Some things couldn't be helped, I guess.
