A Jealous Husband

Feb 24, 2008 20:22

Don't worry, I haven't gotten married yet! I'm only nineteen years old anyway. This is actually the title of today's sermon. I went with my parents and grandparents to Church today, and today's sermon turned out to be about how men should treat women. In particular, we are looking at the example of how Christ Himself treated the women around him. I was quite surprised with today's sermon, to be honest, because I always thought the Bible was rather sexist, because I perceived that women were seen as not as important as men. After all, most of the heroes in the Bible (like Moses, Abraham, ect) were all men.

Yet, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that women and men were actually equal in the eyes of God. However, social perceptions at that point in time dictated that women were to stay at home and look after the housework and children while men went to work, which was why men were seen as more important. That was in the old testament but in the new testament, Christ changed all that. According to Reverend Philip Lim, the pastor who spoke today, it is Christ we should look to as a role model as a way to treat women. He said that Christ was the prime example of a real man, one who was a velvet covered brick; soft on the outside, hard on the inside.

I have to admit that I actually had tears come to my eyes at some parts, when Reverend Lim spoke of how gentle Christ was towards the women He interacted with. Women were very prominent in the New Testament; as a matter of fact, it is from the women that we actually learn most of our lessons from; both from theirs and Christ's behaviour towards each other. It's just so hard to find a man as gentle as Christ, but of course, I do know that being humans, none of us are perfect. I would just be contented with a man who is a close follower of Christ, someone who looks to Christ as a role-model. A gentleman, one might say.

I realise now however, that I'm not sure how I am supposed to act as a women. I'm still trying to learn how to be a woman. I was a lot worse before though, at least now I am willing to wear skirts. In fact, I wore one for Church today. However, it would be nice to have a sermon in which women should behave towards men. It takes two hands to clap and if men and women are willing to play their roles, then life would be very harmonious indeed.
