I'm leaving this open for everyone to see. Feel free to beta. As I watch more epsiodes, I'll try to write more and add to this post. I'll leave this under my friends only banner then.
After watching episode 5x20 of Numb3rs (because really, who can resist massive Charlie!angst), I decided I'd try to get into the show again. I had fallen out of watching the show about 5-6 eps before season 4 ended. I wasn't really pleased with the direction the show was going and with some characters leaving and others coming back, I just fell out of the habit. But
bethcarielle kept telling me how good it was and then told me about 5x20 and I decided to watch it cause I had been waiting for a story line like that.
Now I'm trying to catch up. One of the things that always grabbed me was Colby's storyline of being a triple agent. When that first came out, I remember watching season 3 eps looking for indications that he was undercover, playing both sides. I wanted to start watching season 2 cause that was when the main players all finally got together. I wanted to see that progression play out again.
While watching ep 2x01, I was again struck by Colby. While it was prolly too early in the show/storyline for the actor or writers to have any indication of where Colby would end up, I couldn't help but look for indications or hints or anything that I could twist to fit into the canon of the show.
And then I wrote a drabble. For the first time in a few years, I wrote something. I decided I wanted to write something for each episode up to and maybe a little after Colby's revelation of being a triple agent. I don't know yet whether this will stay gen or become slash. If it does start to get (pre?)slash, it will prolly be Colby/David. They're just the pairing I can see. As of right now I'm planning for gen but things can change, especially depending on my mood or what aspect I want to focus on. I will be providing links to an episode guide to refresh memories of episodes. Because I only have 100 words, I can't review what happened in the episode. I'd rather get out what I think Colby could be feeling or going through.
Please, feel free to rip it apart. Let me know if I need to show more, rather than tell. Tell me if something sucks or just isn't working for you. Am I just saying the same thing over and over or is it actually staying fresh and new? That is my biggest fear that it will get boring.
Let me know so I can make every effort to fix it. I haven't written in a long time. The last thing I wrote was crack, I believe. So don't be afraid to tell me they suck. I'm a big girl, I can handle it.
2x01: Judgement Call (takes place before the episode)
Colby knows that this isn’t going to be easy. He’ll have to be on his guard, make sure he doesn’t give anything away. He can’t or the operation will be over before it will have begun. Instead, he plays the good soldier (doesn’t he always?) and yeah, maybe he pushes that gang too hard. He has to have control over something in his life. All he has left, now, is himself; they took everything else. He’ll do his job and sell piss-poor secrets. He can’t afford to make friends, and he won’t (that’s what he tells himself late at night).
2x02: Bettor or Worse (takes place after the episode)
He does his best to keep them at arm’s length. With MeganReeves, he snarks about her work. Behavioral psychology? Profiling? It’s all just guesses and prayers and luck. The snarks take on a flirtatious edge, though, when she comes back with a witty remark. He can’t help but look up to DonEppes even while he questions the seemingly hopeless but justified conviction the agent has that everything will work out. Colby doesn’t allow himself to think about DavidSinclair; how easy it is to fall in step with a man he barely knows. They’re all potential hostiles. He can’t ever forget.
2x03: Obsession (after episode)
The more time he spends with them, the harder it is to stay aloof. He remembers what it was like in Afghanistan. You’re dependent on your team to watch your back. Trust them or die: it’s that simple. You learn things about the guys and yourself (things you never want to know).
But Eppes and his team, they’re different. They’re just genuinely good. Hell, they manage to make math and law enforcement work (academics are scary people). How? They actually listened. They’re good people (they can’t be spies because he thinks he might like them and isn’t that just great?)
2x04: Calculated Risk (25 minutes in, during/after the arrest of Morton Standbury at the hotel)
When he saw that gun, he realized he was actually scared for David and Megan. It was silly. They were experienced agents with more FBI training than him. Why was he so freaked out? He had gone through Quantico, had combat experience for God’s sake, but he got scared at the sight of a weapon? A little over a month undercover on the team and he was already compromised. Man, Kirkland was gonna be pissed.
He had to remain detached. He had to observe, report, and leak false information; more importantly, he had to ignore that knot in his stomach.
2x05: Assassin after the episode, a phone call between Colby and Kirkland
“Hello?”
“It’s me.”
“What have you got?”
“Nothing so far.”
“Do they suspect anything?”
“No…”
“What is it?”
“Charlie Eppes, he’s worked for your group before.”
“I’m familiar with his work.”
“I’ve seen him do amazing things with math. He could be very valuable.”
“No.”
“It seems a waste not to use-”
“I considered Dr. Eppes. But the fewer people who know, the better.”
“Look-”
“No. All indications show the corruption bigger than us. We trust the wrong person, we’re done. We keep it in house.”
“… Okay.”
“We good?”
“Yeah.”
“Good. We’re starting soon.”
“I’ll be ready.”
