“We’re at the People photo shoot.”
Her voice sounded scratchy and tired, and her body felt tense against his. Her smile was a bit stretched and her eyes lacked that usual flirtatious glint they always held. She was stressed. And he could tell.
The numerous assistants and stylists that had been hovering around them finally backed away, but not before grabbing Mark’s hand and raising it a bit on Sabrina’s leg, where it had been lazily resting. He felt her tense up a bit more, and suddenly realized why she was so stressed. Sabrina was a private person...and here they were in the most intimate situation they had ever been in. At least in public. Add in hordes of people scrutinizing their every motion on this little couch, and it was quite obvious she felt under attack.
It was intriguing to Mark how this was possible. He always was under the impression that Sabrina knew how to deal with the media.
Apparently, she was just a really good faker.
Sabrina let out a small giggle as he let his fingers slide up and down her calf. It was a daring move, but he figured he had to be a bit daring in a situation as precarious as this one was. It all depended on how she took the action...annoying or sweet. He felt her muscles relax just an bit, but it was enough for him to bolster up enough courage to move his hand again.
“What if you had, like, your head on his shoulder?” He was interrupted by the photographer.
“Huh?” he asked, sounding like a little kid.
Sabrina grinned before resting her head gently on his shoulder. Even if she wasn’t comfortable with the intimacy of the photo shoot, she was obviously still a pro at taking directions. He felt her snuggle deeper into the space between his neck and his shoulder and he couldn’t help but move his arm from the back of the couch to rest around her now much more relaxed shoulders, his head tilting closer to hers.
As the camera flashed multiple times in quick succession he realized he had forgotten to smile for about half of the shots. Sabrina was distracting him.
That was nothing new though.
Even though the sting of the elimination was still lingering, the pain was starting to recede a bit. He had never been so wrapped up in somebody before. It had started out as just a partner comforting a partner. Then, almost overnight, it turned into best friend comforting best friend. And now he wasn’t quite sure where they were. They were like best friends with a dash of flirtation and a shake of attraction mixed in. He had never innocently touched a girl so much. His hand never left hers, her hip was constantly bumping into his, and they had ended up laying on the couch watching movies with their legs in a tangle too many times to count. It was all these things that pointed to them being ‘more than friends’, although they were uncomfortable with that title. But to him, it was impossible for him to say they were ‘just friends’.
Because they weren’t.
And now, with his hand softly traveling up and down her leg, gently squeezing it every so often, he knew how it must look. Everyone at the shoot had that look in their eyes. That look that so clearly said, “They are in love.”
And Mark knew he loved Sabrina. But he also loved Derek. And his mom and dad. There was a big difference in loving someone and being in love with someone.
He wasn’t stupid. The photo shoot was for best reality television couples. And obviously to everyone else in the world they were a couple. But to him and her, they were just kind of there. What they had just kind of was.

She felt his apprehension and his nerves at being in front of the camera for so long. His experience in this situation came down to him turning around a ballroom dance floor. Not posing. But she couldn’t blame him. The pictures that had been taken on the couch had made HER nervous. It was ridiculous really, because she knew what they had gotten themselves into. It was all publicity to the photographers and paparazzi. They didn’t know her or Mark personally. And they never really would.
It just bothered her how obvious they were being without even realizing it.
“Ok, shake it up a little bit!” The photographer shouted from behind the camera. Sabrina giggled again as she did a little shimmy with her shoulders. Mark couldn’t hold back his giggles either, and she finally felt him relax.
The next pose was much easier, less intimate. It actually seemed like a prom picture to Sabrina, as they stood side by side. Mark leaned in a kissed her forehead, lingering just a bit too long to make it seem like they were just following directions. She suddenly felt a little reckless. It had been a long week, and an even longer day.
“I do!” She mumbled as Mark backed away, mimicking a bride at her wedding.
His look of surprise caught her off guard and she did the only thing she could think of. She started to laugh. And then so did he.
“Just kidding!” She squealed as she leaned into his body shaking with laughter.
Mark covered his mouth with his hand, willing the laughter to go away on it’s own. “I’ve got the giggles!”
Sabrina suddenly forgot they were in front of a camera. It was like they were back in the dance studio, and they were laughing about something ridiculous as usual.. His guard was down, and it was obvious by the way his British accent came out in the four words he had just said. It made them both grin as Sabrina mimicked him.
As the camera flashed, reality came crashing back down on both of them. “Sorry!” Sabrina apologized quickly as she snapped back into position, Mark’s face both surprised and professional as he got rid of his laughter as well.
“No, it’s cute!” The photographer chuckled.
Sabrina stood for a moment, torn between anger at how obvious they were being, and happiness that Mark could make her this comfortable even in front of the photography crew. After all they had been through together, she knew it was going to get harder and harder to fight whatever was between them. She wasn’t sure if they were a couple. Well, they were on the dance floor...but now that the show was over for them...it was hard to distinguish what was real and what was just carried over from the passion they each held from the dances they had performed together.
As she gazed up into Mark’s eyes she knew she hadn’t imagined anything. While his face was solemn, his eyes held the emotion she knew he was dying to show. She had never been much of a touchy feely girl, and according to Derek, Mark had never been either with any of his old girlfriends. But somehow whenever they were together they were literally together. She felt confident when his hand slipped into hers, and she got that little spark of attraction when they were walking side by side and she would gently bump her hip into his. It was inevitable.
As she leaned in toward Mark’s strong body, resting a hand on his chest, and then smiling serenely at the camera, she knew Mark was doing anything but just posing. He was probably staring at her, and while that made it completely obvious to everyone watching the shoot that there were more than just friendly feelings between the two of them, she found she didn’t care.
From the way Mark’s lips twitched as she glanced up at him, she realized he probably didn’t care much either.
They were finally content to just be.
