a/n: minseon is cis and somewhere on the ace scale and lu hua is nonbinary( i used they/them pronouns) probably also on the ace scale, but their relationship is deeper than a regular friendship written for
femmexo here is my bingocard minseon combs her cropped hair behind her ears, watching as lu hua rummages through their locker, their hair in double buns that gives them a cutesy appearance.
lu hua finally slams the locker shut, smiling at minseon, they head out together.
outside is impossibly cold, minseon furrowing deeper into her scarf, linking a gloved hand with lu hua.
“you forgot your gloves again,” minseon’s voice is muffled.
“i know, i think i left them on the bus the other day actually.”
“hmph.”
minseon tucks lu hua’s hand into her jacket pocket, warming their cold fingers with her own.
“do you think there’ll be a lot to do today?” lu hua says absently.
“there’s always something to do,” minseon replies, watching the flurries of snow swirling around them.
“i know that, but i mean, isn’t it adoption day?”
minseon nods, gripping lu hua’s hand as the snow begins to fall harder.
“hurry up.”
lu hua smiles at her, red nosed, snowflakes clinging to their long lashes. lu hua takes off running.
frankly speaking, lu hua is being reckless, but minseon feels laughter bubbling up in her chest regardless.
“not fair!” she shouts, boots pounding against the pavement as she takes off after lu hua. minseon feels her backpack bouncing heavily against her back, but she’s surprised they make it to the animal shelter with out slipping on any ice.
the year is coming to an end, and the dead of winter keeps people from venturing outside. lu hua huffs, voicing their disappointment when no one comes inside.
“at this rate we won’t be able to get them to good homes,” lu hua says petting the kittens in her lap, “poor babies.”
“i’m sure someone will show up,” minseon is much more optimistic, there small terrier at her feet lifts its head briefly before falling back asleep.
a few people trickle in during the next hour, lu hua squeals when three older dogs are lovingly adopted by an older couple. the dogs happily disappear out the door with their new owners.
minseon makes her rounds of feeding the older dogs kept in kennels. she’s much more worried about them; they have lesser chances of adoption compared to the whimpering puppies and overactive kittens in the shelter.
“dottie,” lu hua coos a few kennels down. the two year old boxer barks loudly.
minseon pets the greyhound she’s feeding, letting the large dog lean into her hand. she always feels bad for them when they show up at the shelter. they’re dogs raised to compete, usually left behind one they’re past their prime. the dog’s kind dark eyes look into her.
“hey mimi, you think someone will adopt you today?” he stands on his hind legs, almost knocking minseon over. she laughs quietly when he nuzzles into her hair, snuffling her ear. he doesn’t lick her, he’s always much more reserved, minseon thinks.
she lets him be, closing the kennel so he can’t wander about.
“i’ve been thinking,” lu hua says once they lock dottie’s kennel, “of doing my part today and adopting a dog.”
“your parents would kill you,” minseon says picking up the dog food container.
“i’m legally able to, and dottie would be my responsiblity.”
“yeah but you also said you might go back to china for uni, what then?”
minseon is always the voice of reason, and she feels the brief twisting knots in her stomach. graduation is coming up, and she still has no idea what she wants to do.
“you’re right,” lu hua perks up again, greeting a family that comes in.
minseon’s heart expands when she bids mimi good bye. at least the greyhound can start the new year with a loving family.
“so have you talked to your mom?” lu hua asks some time later. they’re cleaning out the litter boxes now.
“no, she’s mad.”
minseon’s mom had gone through her phone and read her texts.
she hadn’t planned on coming out to her mom, ever. she hoped her mom would move on, pretend it hadn’t happened.
minseon sighs, “not mad, but she’s been colder towards me.”
lu hua ties up the bags, following minseon to the sinks where they wash up.
“you should move to china with me, your mandarin’s okay, and you have me.”
“i don’t wanna run away,” minseon laughs, but the idea isn’t ludicrous if she thinks about it.
“not runaway,” lu hua blinks, “just find some room to breathe. far away. in a different country.”
minseon scrunches her nose, laughing when lu hua bumps her playfully.
“become a vet minnie, live your dreams. maybe kiss someone cute,” lu hua’s eyes sparkle, brilliant light, and radiant smile.
minseon rolls her eyes, “me, a vet?”
“you love animals. if i was caught in a burning building with a cat, you’d save the cat and forget about me.”
“lies! i’d get the cat and drag you along as an afterthought.”
“i’m touched.”
“you know i’d grab you both at the same time, you’re the overly affectionate cat my mom never let me have,” minseon giggles at the idea of lu hua rubbing against her like the calico currently doing so.
“i’m not that touchy,” lu hua protests half heartedly. but they are, lu hua is the only one allowed to attach themselves to minseon.
the only one allowed to coddle and touch and press in close.
minseon secretly adores it, but she shifts away if anyone else tries the same thing.
lu hua made a home in her heart long ago.
it steadily grows pitch black outside, but the snow lets up. a steady flow of single adults and families come in.
it’s bittersweet seeing the animals they’ve grown to love leave through the front door. but the hopefulnes in seeing them find a new home outweighs any sadness.
Song Qian, the owner of the shelter thanks them for their hard work.
“so i guess this is the last time i see you two for a while, huh?” she pats them on the head. minseon allows a group hug, being the shortest, she’s squished.
but its comforting above all.
she thinks about china as they walk through the cold, arms linked, pushed together.
“let’s get something hot to drink,” lu hua suggests.
minseon is eighteen and she wishes time could could stop, if only for a few hours as she watches her friend carefully sip at the hot chocolate. they share it between them as they walk home.
“china might be a good option,” she says breaking the quiet between them. she watches the steam curling from the opening of the cup.
lu hua faces her, pushing off their ear muffs, small ears instantly turning the same shade of pink as their nose.
“maybe, if that’s what you want.”
“surviving is important right?”
“yeah.” lu hua grins, a slightly more serious look in their eyes.
almost a yeat later minseon finds herself walking through her first snow in beijing. lu hua welcomes her home to the little closet they call their own. they let minseon press her cold feet against their own.
“lets relax a little bit,” lu hua says turning the tv on, “then homework and dinner.”
“you sound like me,” minseon teases.
“that’s what i get for living with you,” lu hua laughs snuggling in close.
the schedule gets off track because they fall asleep. tangled up limbs, a variety show droning in the background and a fresh coat of snow dusting the streets outside.
