joonmi’s day begins at 6am, exactly. she lies awake for ten minutes, finally stretching and getting up.
she makes coffee. the small apartment soon filled with the aromatic smell as she showers, dressing in casual wear, its friday after all.

by 6:30 she’s sipping her coffee from a handpainted mug that reads “i love you!” in bright yellow.

“Jinri!” she calls walking into her daughter’s room, the little girl already starting to stir. she steps on a lego, biting back a curse. her four year old daughter’s toys strewn across the room make her groan slightly.

“jinri honey it’s time to get up, we have to get you to school,” she crouches on the side of the bed, pulling at the covers when jinri sleepily hides under them.

“i dont wanna.”

“that’s not true,” joonmi smiles at her daughter. jinri’s squinting up at her now through the sleepiness.

she pouts, finally sitting up. the braids joonmi leaves in her hair at night are a matted mess.

jinri obediently gets up despite her slight grumbling, and she follows joonmi to the kitchen table where they eat breakfast together. tiny hands clutch the large glass of milk with mickey mouse printed on it.

“do you want me to paint your nails again this weekend?”

jinri nods excitedly, “green with glitter! or a rainbow!” she talks excitedly around her toast.

“mama, can i wear my new shoes today?” jinri asks when she’s dressed in her perfectly pressed uniform, the comforting smell of fabric softener clinging to it.

“not today sweetie, it’s raining, you’re gonna have to wear your rain boots,” joonmi says and as if on cue, there’s a sudden clap of thunder.

the little girl nods solemnly, and joonmi’s brow creases with worry. they walk out the door hand in hand, matching red rainboots and umbrellas in their hands.

joonmi arrives to work with slightly damp hair that she coaxes into a braid. at her desk she toes off her boots, before she hears someone calling her name.

“joonmi!”

she looks over to see sojin bounding towards her, long curled hair falling over her shoulders, and a bright smile on her face. joonmi would be lying is she said she didn’t have a little bit of a crush on her.

its okay, because sojin is married. and she’s joonmi’s best friend.

“morning! what’s up?” joonmi playfully bumps her shoulder before sitting at her desk.

“so how about today during our break we go to that new yoga studio that opened up?”

“yoga?” joonmi questions as she logs onto her work computer, “why yoga?”

“we’ve had too much stress lately!!” sojin laughs loudly, “we need something to wind down with.”

“but why yoga?” joonmi still isn’t making the connection. she has a new email, one of her writers thanking her for her patience on their last poject.

“please, i just wanna go, i read about it on a blog, and it looks like fun,” sojin pouts cutely at her, “and I don’t want to go alone.” she finally admits.

“okay, but i don’t have work out clothes.”

“that’s okay, i brought you some!” sojin smiles cheekily at her.

joonmi lays her head on desk. maybe it won’t be awful.

the studio is a short walk from the office building, it’s small, one of many business in a weathered brick building that is anything but special.

joonmi likes the atmoshere when they walk into venus rising, the name of the yoga studio. it’s spacious, honey colored hardwood flooring, and the entire left side of the room is a floor to ceiling window with hanging plants. its on the third floor so it looks over the city, and the view is honestly breathtaking. the back wall has a space with cubbies that remind joonmi of her daughter’s classroom. they’re urged to sign in and take one of the green mats, and they do so, choosing a spot a bit to the side.

“hello everyone,” a tall woman walks to the front. she has a short bob pulled into small double ponytails, her hair is inky black and reflects the light easily, and she’s wearing simple black work out clothes. joonmi spots a tattoo that goes up her side, disappearing under her sports bra. she looks athletic, like someone that spends a lot of time working outside too.

“my name is yutao and i’m going to be leading you through a few simple poses. i’ll walk around later to help any of you that may need it,” she says, adding a soft smile, “this is an hour for relaxing.”

“she’s really hot,” sojin whispers, “don’t you think?”

joonmi’s mouth feels dry. yutao has already turned around facing the mirrored wall, her face reflected back to them.

“yeah.”

and yutao is much more than hot. her soothing voice resonates in the room, concentrated and serene. her face is made up of strong features, broad and sharp, angular. it contrasts the way her body languidly flows into downward dog and cat. joonmi almost forgets to exhale when she traces her eyes along the fluid arch of yutao’s spine, the strain of muscles as she curves her body, looking upwards.

joonmi concentrates on the self guided pose as yutao walks around. she focuses on pushing up from the floor, shoulders down and sternum out.

“here,” yutao’s voice is in her ear. she forgets to breathe again, momentarily. her fingers gently press joonmi’s shoulders, pushing between her shoulders next.

“be gentle, you’re very obervant, you’ll easily get it,” yutao carefully pushes joonmi’s hair out of her face as she rolls up.

they finish with savasana, isolating different muscles and then releasing each individual part one at a time. joonmi feels like she’s floating.

“thank you everyone, i hope to see you next time,” yutao says bowing.

sojin pokes at her, teasing joonmi of her obvious staring back in the office.

“but we’re supposed to watch her!” she protests pathetically.

“you’re surprisingly flexible!” yutao exclaims the second time she goes to class. sojin snickers beside her as she tugs on her shoes.

“i used to do gymnastics as a kid,” joonmi explains. yutao smiles down at her, she’s wearing small silver hoops in her ears today. a purple headband pushes back her hair.

“ah, that’s really cute. i hope you keep coming.”

yutao’s eye smile makes joonmi dizzy.

the fourth class she finds out there’s an all ages session offered sunday mornings. she also introduces herself properly.

“joonmi? it’s nice to properly meet you.”

her name has never sounded as nice as it does falling from yutao’s mouth.

joonmi shows up with jinri in tow on sunday. she’s bouncing with excitmement, despite it being 9am on a sunday.

“calm down,” joonmi laughs as the little girl trips over herself pulling off her sneakers, shoving them into a cubby.

“good morning, joonmi,” yutao says sleepily walking over to them. today she’s wearing spandex shorts and tshirt that rides up. joonmi diverts her gaze when she sees a peek of her bellybutton.

“hi,” she says, feeling jinri push into her leg.

“and who’s this?” yutao turns her attention to the suddenly shy girl.

“this is my daughter, jinri.”

“hello,” jinri steps forward when yutao leans down to her.

“hi sweet pea,” yutao seems at ease, her voice full of affection. it blooms something else in joonmi. people being kind and genuinely liking her daughter is pivotal to any relationship she builds.

“you and your mama are very pretty,” yutao’s eye dance when jinri giggles.

“she a little ray of light,” yutao says when they bid their goodbyes later.

“she’s definitely the apple of my eye,” joonmi laughs, “i don’t know what i’d do without her.” she looks fondly at jinri who’s chatting with a group of other small children.

“what about her dad, what’s he like?”

“out of the picture, mostly. i’ve dated here and there.”

“oh.”

“but my last girlfriend didn’t like jinri, my little girl is much more important to me,” joonmi realizes too late that she’s let too much slip. she bites her lip.

“i understand,” yutao tugs at one of her ponytails. joonmi really likes how cute it looks on her, “see you next friday?”

“and sunday too,” joonmi promises when jinri tugs her out out of the room. they stomp home, its raining again.

“she’s nice,” jinri says, “and I had lots of fun today mama!”

they do some grocery shopping, jinri pointing out things that catch her eye and counting everything in sight. they doze off on the couch together after lunch.

a perfect sunday really.

“joonmi?” yutao asks before class on friday.

“hey,” joonmi tugs her shoes off. sojin didn’t come to class this time, instead she opted to grab lunch with her husband.

“hey, can i ask you something?”

“sure.”

“don’t feel any olbigation okay,” she pushes at her hair, yutao’s wearing is loosely today, “but do you want to get dinner tomorrow? if its not too short of a notice--“

“i would need to find a babysitter for jinri and i--“

“actually i was thinking you could bring her too? i’m sure she’d have fun and she’s such a sweet little girl--“

“i’d love to, and i’m sure jinri would too, she really likes you.”

“she does?” yutao’s cheeks color, looking at her bare feet. joonmi notices her toes are painted an aqua color. when she’s like this, simply talking to her, joonmi realizes how gentle yutao really is.

“yes, and so do i.”

“that makes me really happy to hear,” yutao’s face softens when she smiles like this, completely open.

they trade phone numbers. joonmi is giddy when she receives a text later that evening.

“mama,” yutao pulls on a pair of ballet flats, polka dotted tights and yellow skirt complimenting one another, “i like yutao. i’m excited to see her.”

“me too honey, and i’m sure she’s excited to see you too.”

“really?” jinri’s face lights up, and she twirls, singing yutao’s name,” happy happy happy!”

yutao shows up in black skinnies, a silky top and flat black boots, but she still compliments joonmi first.

“both of you look really stunning!”

“stunning?” jinri ask.

“it means we look really nice,” joonmi explains.

“yutao is stunning too! right mama?” jinri smiles big, pleased with herself.

“she is.”

“come on, i’m sure jinri will be excited to eat pizza.”

“so western food?” joonmi asks taking jinri by the hand.

“yeah, and i heard they also serve really good wine.”

jinri grabs yutao’s hand too, linking the three of them.

joonmi can’t help but feel overwhelmingly happy when she catches their reflection.

the three of them.

yutao kisses her first on the their third date. joonmi melts into the touch, feeling the soft fluttering touches of yutao’s hands on her back. the careful way she holds joonmi’s face has the shorter woman pressing in harder.

joonmi strokes up her sides, laying her head on yutao’s chest. she’s so much taller, and she makes joonmi feel protected.

kissing is really nice, joonmi forgot what it was like to yearn for someone else’s touch. the dizzying intoxicating way yutao steals her breath away.

yutao walks her home after catching a movie, just the two of them this time.

“i’m really sleepy,” yutao yawns, stretching so that her entire body is elongated further. beautiful, elegant long lines of muscle make joonmi want more.

but next time, soon.

“me too,” joonmi realizes. her babysitter must be even more tired, “do you want to come over for a movie night tomorrow? jinri wants you to join us.”

“i’d be more than happy to,” yutao smiles, sleepy pretty eyes blinking at her. she brushes her lips to joonmi’s temple, “anything with both of you sounds perfect.”

“ah.”

“if the movie runs late, can i spend the night? is that okay to ask--“

“make sure you bring your toothbrush,” joonmi pokes her sides, teasing.

yutao envelopes her, her entire body curling around joonmi. she feels really young again, and joonmi almost expects her own mother to come outside to scold her. yutao is solid against her, her chin resting on top of joonmi’s head.

yutao always smells comforting.

“can’t wait,” she says releasing her hold on joonmi.

“text me?”

“of course,” yutao says brushing her fingers against the tip of joonmi’s, “tell jinri goodnight for me.”

joonmi nods, quickly pecking yutao’s mouth before going into her apartment.

“you’re getting better at this,” yutao says pushing joonmi lower into butterfly position.

“yeah?” her voice is strained, but she does feel how easily she can stretch further down. yutao’s strong hands guide her lower into the stretch.

“okay i’m done,” joonmi laughs, slowly rolling up and then laying on her back, “do you want to come pick up jinri from school with me?”

“is that alright?” yutao leans back onto her hands, watching joonmi carefully.

“jinri adores you,” joonmi reassures her, placing a hand on her cheek, “i do too.”

yutao beams at her.

a second ray of light.

“come on, or jinri will be grumpy we’re late.”

they leave hand in hand.
