[Character Music] The Photographer's Mix

Mar 25, 2005 03:21

So, this CD starts with the themes of love, lust, and loss. It continues this way for the first ten tracks, then we start getting into acceptance, dominance and victory. The idea is that discovering he's a werewolf has essentially ruined this character's life, but he eventually gets a handle on things. Clocking in at 78 minutes, 3 seconds, I'm going to go through these directly.

Track 1: Digital Underground - Packet Prelude
We start it off with a piece that's only fifty-eight seconds long, but is light, jazzy, and a little bit sexy. I originally feared the voice at the end would be out of place, but it actually works with the overall theme, IMO. A nice appetizer that I think leads well into the next song.

Track 2: Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
Ahh, heisted from the Secretary soundtrack. I don't know much Leonard Cohen beyond this and Everybody Knows, but I know good shit when I hear it and this one struck me as a great opener. The title is also perfect.

Ah, the moon's too bright
The chain's too tight
The beast won't go to sleep
I've been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep

Gold, I tell you, gold. :)

Track 3: Joss Stone - Fell in Love with a Boy
Stumbled across this one when, a few months ago, I was looking through that list of the greatest covers of all time. Before that, I'd no idea it existed. I admit, I kinda wedged it in here, but it fits the character and it's just a great little tune.

Can't think of anything to do
My left brain knows all love is fleetin'
He's still looking for something new
I said it once before but it bears repeating

Track 4: Depeche Mode - A Question of Lust (Ambient Mix)
This is actually one of the first songs I knew I wanted on this soundtrack and was terribly pleased I found this mix of it. It adds a certain something that would've made it a bit harder to fit in with the rest of these tracks otherwise.

Track 5: George Michael - Fastlove
More tracks! For some reason, I can't help but feel like I'm wasting a disc if I don't try to cram it full of as much data as possible, so I needed at least one more song. When I remembered this one, I felt like an idiot for not thinking of it earlier. That said, it's perfect. :)

Looking for some education
Made my way into the night
All that bullshit conversation
Well baby can’t you read the signs?

I won’t bore you with the details, baby
I don’t even want to waste your time
Let’s just say that maybe
You could help to ease my mind
Baby, I ain’t Mr. Right

Track 6: Jem - Come On Closer
First heard this from the trailers for the movie Closer, which is a fucking awsome movie adapted from a fucking awesome play. Jem also plays a song I consider a goth club standby (which I won't bother to name, since I'm sticking it another mix :). I've downloaded a few of their others tracks, but they're (sadly) not as good. Anyway, you'd be hard pressed to find a better song about wanting to fuck somebody.

Track 7: Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
You can't have a soundtrack for a werewolf character without at least one significant "moon" reference. Seriously, it's a rule.

In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon

Track 8: The Cult - Painted on My Heart
Ah, best known from the Gone in 60 Seconds soundtrack, we've got one of the greatest "I miss you baby" songs ever. We know it, we love it, we're moving on.

Track 9: Mary Elizabeth McGlynn - I Want Love (Studio Mix)
I totally stumbled onto this track from Silent Hill 3 while talking to spinwhip on AIM. I got curious as to what some of the songs on jaydedone's mix sounded like and so I did a search and downloaded some random tracks. This popped up in the batch and I decided I liked it enough. It's a little overdramatic all around, but I kinda dig it. There's a bunch of names attributed to the song, but I decided to just go with the name of the singer for this version; makes my brain hurt less.

Track 10: The The - Dogs of Lust
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Period. It didn't occur to me to put it in until recently, though.

I keep reaching up
But they drag me back down
Wherever I try to hide
I will always be found

When you're lustful, When you're lonely
& the heat is rising...slowly

Track 11: Extra Fancy - Yes, Sir
Oh, I agonized about this track for days. It's noticeably different than the other songs 'cause it's a queercore/punk song on a debut album of a band that had just gotten a real record label and then fell apart. Still, it sounds good if you don't try to match up the lyrics and music too closely. :)

I went down to the water and I took off all my clothes
Skinheads showed up there, they're all about breaking bones
I never seen their girlfriends
I guess real men run in packs
Cops wouldn't save me, now I swim with a baseball bat

Track 12: Tool - Stinkfist
I don't think I need to explain this one.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive.

Track 13: Chevelle - The Red
Used this previously on another CD project, but it worked too well to leave it alone. I'm seeing a young guy who gets attacked, loses control, and kills everyone who's fucking with him.

They say freak,
When you're singled out,
The red, well it filters through

Track 14: David Draiman (of Disturbed) / KoRn - Forsaken
I couldn't resist putting this track on here; it was just too damned amusing. Now, obviously, this song is from the Queen of the Damned soundtrack and is supposed to be about vampires, but it doesn't take too much creative thinking to adapt it to the current Werewolf game.

You see I cannot be forsaken
Because I’m not the only one
We walk amongst you
Feeding, raping
Must we hide from everyone

Track 15: Alter Bridge - Metalingus
Alter Bridge, which has got to be one of the weirder names for a band I've ever heard of, was a group I stumbled onto in the past couple of months. When I found this song, I knew I wanted it on a mix, but I didn't know where until I revisited this one.

I'll never long for what might have been
Regret won't waste my life again
I won't look back
I'll fight to remain:

On this day I see clearly everything has come to life
A bitter place and a broken dream
And we'll leave it all, leave it all behind

Track 16: Mercy Drive - Burn In My Light
Weird little indie band who're only selling their album through their
website. Stumbled onto 'em through one of my many media obsessions and found
this slightly-less-than three minute song. I definitely think it captures
the feeling I'm going for.

Hey!
Nothing you can say
Nothing's gonna change what you’ve done to me
Now it's time to shine
I’m gonna take what’s mine
You're gonna burn in my light

Track 17: Our Lady Peace - Whatever
Freaky little Canadian band I'm slowly getting into. This song is particularly
well-known to a certain group of people and was a little wary of putting it in,
but it fits.

There's no holding me back
Well I'm not driven by fear, I'm Just
Driven by anger and
You're under attack,
'Cause I'm just climbing up slowly, I'm
The one and only I

The tease, the wheels, the lies
Stumble in your mind
The fear, the hope inside
You're keeping

But whatever you need
Ever you've got
Ever you want
I'll take back again
Whatever you need
Ever you've got
Ever you want
I'll take back again

Track 18: The Von Bondies - C'mon C'mon
This song is the main title theme for the TV show Rescue Me and it's obvious why. It's about your friends, guys you've known for a long time, dying. It works perfectly for a TV show about firefighters and it works just as well for a pack of werewolves.

With my teeth locked down I can see the blood
Of a thousand men who have come and gone
Now we grieve cause now is gone
Things were good when we were young

Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon)
Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon)
Will I ever learn? (c'mon c'mon)
(c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon)

Track 19: The Doors - Riders on the Storm
All right, I admit, a large reason I chose this song is 'cause the character's a Storm Lord. :) However, certain bits do fit very very well. Anyway, I don't need to throw you any lyrics, 'cause you already know them. I think this one also makes for a good closer to this mix.
