I am putting off doing my homework. Yeah, I'm that awesome. I need to read a pretty short play this weekend, and I SHOULD start putting together stuff for my 10th grade CP kids (that level between honors and remedial), but I just don't wanna. In fact, I am pulling procrastinatory stuff like I did in college. Think about it: if you get out of the shower, but don't get dressed, how can you possibly be expected to do anything? Hm? HM?!? I got my first paycheck on Friday (WOO!), so I'm thinking I should go buy something fun, but only after I read some of the play. Grumble. The first week was pretty good, though; I have one day of classes that should be quite pleasant (all 10th grade honors), except for the fact that one class is almost 30 kids. I guess that balances out, as the other is 13 kids, and will therefore be absolutely amazing. When brainstorming how to make a good classroom climate, the 13 kid class listed Sarah Palin, Nazis, the KKK, giant killer robots, and swarming bees as things that make a classroom unpleasant. They are clearly awesome. My other day of classes (block scheduling, woo) is two sections of CP 10th grade and one section of Honors 11th grade; I still haven't had them for a full day, but it is going to be a challenge. The CP classes are riddled with kind of scary learning disabilities, behavioral stuff, and weird health problems, and (so far) I don't have the Ed Tech in their classes that it sounds like I should. On the upside, Ryan is interviewing for an Ed Tech job this week that MIGHT be the one that ends up in my room. That would be friggin' hilariously awesome, and would make everyone's lives better. I'm worried that my Honors 11th graders may have enormous, tedious egos - almost none of them did their summer reading because they figured they had the option not to because of being honors students - but I think that will create some really interesting teaching moments. ("If you tell a college professor that you don't NEED to do work they assign you just because you think you don't, how will that go? Let's roleplay!") In any case, I'm barely sleeping from the stress and am paralyzed with fear that I have no idea what I'm doing, but I get the impression that most teachers start their years this way - even the veterans - so I'll just keep myself hydrated and try to do my reading.
