Scales.
How I Met Your Mother, Robin/Barney, Lily. PG. 368 words, written for the Canon Drabble-a-thon.

Maybe it's not the best word to describe it, but on a scale of lameness, this probably beats "Sandcastles in the Sand" by far. As a matter of fact, it steps on it repeatedly with cleated shoes until it has her sixteen-year-old self crying on the floor out of fear.

"What? I used to take things very seriously."

"I can't argue with that," Lily says with a slightly pained gesture.

"Do you even plan on helping me at all?"

"I'm sorry," Lily apologizes, but she immediately snorts. "It's just - you and Barney are the one thing I never thought I'd see happen. Actually, any sort of feelings involving Barney were pretty high on the list, but a smart person falling for him? A smart person who knows him? Yeah, pretty much trumps them all."

Robin's not nearly drunk enough for judgment, so she tells Lily that. "Besides, I didn't say I was falling for him. I just said I was - appealed."

"But you should be appalled, Robin. It's Barney." She says that like it explains it all.

It actually kind of does.

"And the way you're sulking about this? You were way less crazy with Ted," Lily adds. Robin shrugs.

"Ted was easy," she says. She tries to sip her drink, and realizes that her glass is already empty. She looks at the reflections on the bottom like they're going to explain her life. "Ted was adorable. Ted is the sort of person you're supposed to - fall in love with, or be interested in beyond sex."

And that's the cue for Barney and Marshall to come back from the bar, because Marshall's his guest wingman now or something, and Lily looks at him with a mix of curiosity and... sadness.

"What?" Barney asks.

"Nothing," Lily says. Barney observes her.

"Seriously, what?"

"You have something in your teeth," Lily says, chuckling when Barney runs off to the bathroom, and shrugging apologetically to Robin. She should know better than to tell Lily anything at all - and she should know better than to stay later than Marshall and Lily.

She's waiting for Barney to gush about whomever he banged last night, but, surprisingly, it doesn't happen, and Robin's first reaction is to freak out and make up a story and run.

Yeah, lame's not such a bad word to describe it.
