You know, while the Dreamstage Korea for Malaysia didn't quite end up as exciting as I thought, one thing's for certain... it has increased my love for it by 10 fold. I AM NOT KIDDING.
I already suspect that I may be turning into a B2ST and 2NE1 fan and that's pretty bad in itself. But now I'm listening to almost all K-Pop songs with newfound love and am enjoying almost all that comes my way. I'll talk about Dreamstage Korea, but I currently found a new obsession to "fawn" over for now, and would like to share with you a K-Pop group which is relatively unknown, but would probably be making headlines sooner or later.
Ladies and gentleman, I present to you...
Remember how a few months back I was
lamenting about the lack of K-Pop groups that actually have a mix of boys and girls in them? At the time, the best example of a group that attempted that was
Co-Ed School, which did an overall great job but seeing as they have yet to release another single, it probably didn't achieve the right amount of fame it wanted. Instead, the girls in the group formed another new K-Pop group called
5 Dolls. So what was the point of forming a co ed group when in the end, you still separated them? It looks like boys and girls in the land of K-Pop were destined to work together only for a few moments like collaborations and are better off achieving fame in their own genders.
I bring this up and yet this issue still reflects strongly in this new group that I discovered
Sunny Hill. Here we have a 5 member group with four of them being female and one male. If you think that's uneven enough, you can barely hear the guy in their latest songs! But I digress... I barely know this group, and according to
Wikipedia, this group originally had three members. Their first single was Love Letters, and it's the only main single that I know of where we can hear the guy's voice.

A simple song and a tune that will easily cheer you up on good days and the group was known for this kind of music. But in a competitive K-Pop world, songs like these can be easily drowned out, which is probably why I have never heard of this group for a long while.
So now, tell me how did this simple little group gain two more members and produce this amazing single?!

Just look at that! Listen to that! It's like they mixed up all the usual cliches of what makes a K-Pop song work lately, amped it up and added their own flair to that. Is that bad? Nope! I actually loved it! Pair it up with a really good music video and... SOLD! This group is now totally worth noting. Heck, I sat up as I watched this music video, as it was definitely a visual fest and it's such a nice change from the usual dancing, posing music videos I've been seeing so much lately. So it was a treat!
The dance is amazingly catchy and after a couple of listens, you will find yourself humming, "Midnight Circus, riddle me! Omo!". Again, maybe in this K-Pop world where competition is high, this group still hasn't made much of a name yet. But you do get the feeling that this group has a lot to offer.
Back on the guy not playing much of a role, it DOES bug me... but I think he plays a role in how the music was produced. And just like
the only male member in The Corrs who doesn't do much vocally, he does play a big role in the group. Same thing with this guy. So it fascinates me that instead of putting him (more) in the shadows and showcasing the four girls more, they still include him in the photoshoots and music videos. I guess regardless of how little a role he plays in the overall package of a K-Pop group, he is still considered an important member. And at a time where there are very few groups who have a mix of male and female, I appreciate their attempt.
Now I mentioned that Sunny Hill may be a little more famous now, but not because of Midnight Circus. Midnight Circus was released a couple of months back, and I only heard about them recently. What really caught my attention was the release of their next single, and they had just released a music video yesterday.

This. Has to be. The BEST. K-Pop music video. I have seen to date. Just the message behind this music video, the hideous looking boy who did everything for the beautiful girl that eventually led to his end... is just fantastic. And the way the music haunts in the background as you watched everything unfold is amazing. The visuals of a grotesque figure being experimented on is disturbing, and the ending is like a punch to the stomach... There's just no denying that this is one of the best K-Pop music videos I have ever seen.
Ballads are usually reserved for the idols singing, looking sad and pretty and all that. But this time their sadness transcends to what the character is going through, and you just feel it (by the way, I suggest checking out
the lyrics of the song... the meaning behind it makes you feel the song even more). I am GLAD that they made such a music video, and there are so many ways we can decipher what happened, and if this symbolizes something (like the K-Pop music industry, perhaps? XD).
Yet sadly, due to how graphic the music video was (especially in the scene where blood was being drawn out),
this music video is currently banned on certain channels. I find it quite sad, cause we have a lot of
suggestive music videos available out there, and yet they couldn't have the guts to take in some graphic scenes?
Well, one good thing is that when word spreads out about a banned music video, people will be curious to watch it even more. At least then people will be more aware of Sunny Hill. While the group may go through some issues for now, there's no denying that from what I've seen and heard... Sunny Hill is definitely a K-Pop group worth noting.
