This is not the Disneyland Jungle Cruise

Hi everyone,
How are you all doing? I'm doing a-okay. It's getting really warm here...I'm starting to carry a "rag" or a handkerchief around to wipe my perspiration. I think the dry season is actually here.

The poster contest that i was helping with at Care Belize, has come to a close..and the judges have chosen a winner. I promise i didn't sway them one bit...it just so happened that the 1st place winner was from the school that i help at here in Belmopan (Belmopan Primary School #2). Cool huh? yeah, so our school receives $500...and the kid who drew gets $25 worth of art supplies and a Care Belize t-shirt. Good stuff. And I get a Care Belize t-shirt too :) yaye.

Besides that, I'm a little sad because our youth group at church is kind of dwindling down. only 3 boys come now..and they were saying that they are not planning on going to the next meeting because Ms. Kelley (the lady in charge of the youth prayer group) "railed" (got mad) at them. So the boys are not going to come this weekend :( hum...and we have some cool activities for them to do.

But the most fun thing this week was our trip to Lamanai (a Mayan ruin in the northern part of Belize). Lamanai means "submerged crocodile". The ruins were cool..but the boat ride was the highlight. In order to get to the ruins...we decided to take a boat tour from Orange Walk Town via the New River to Lamanai. The tour was about 1.5 -2 hours. It was great. Our tour was made up of 5 young women (my friend Shannon, Karen, Tammy, me and a UK tourist, Emma). We saw a sugar refinery, hotel resorts, a Mennonite community right by the river banks. There was lots of wildlife too. A Spider monkey saw us from the trees and climbed right INTO our boat!!!! None of us expected anything to come that close..so we kind of screamed and leaned to the opposite side of the boat that the monkey boarded on. The monkey just wanted to eat a couple bananas, which gave us the chance to take pictures and we even petted it. We also saw 2 baby crocodiles, different birds, tiny turtles, howler monkeys, a toucan bird....
it was just nice to be outside. And we had really nice weather. It was raining the past couple of days ..but that day (last saturday)..it was a clear day. A fellow peace corp volunteer lives in a village next to Lamanai (Indian church), and she met up with us at the ruins. The ladies at her village make silver jewelry at the site, so as a rememberance of our trip..and heck they were cute jewelry..we bought some :)

well, that's it for now..i hope I can last through this heat. I'm definitely learning how to perspire. :)
hope you all are doing well!! talk to you all soon.
Cherry
