Fandoms that I dabbled in this year, old and new: Supernatural, CW RPF, Football RPF, Harry Potter, Leverage, and (although I have yet to write anything for it) Due South
My favorite story this year:
Consider the Hairpin Turn. It's the first thing I've ever written that is exactly what I wanted it to be.
My least favorite story this year: Probably
Honey, Give Me a Smile. Not because there's anything wrong with it, but I am a little bitter that it's PWP I wrote in one night and it's the Sam/Dean/Jess fic I've written that got the most attention. I've put a lot of heart and soul into writing for that pairing, and it was not in that fic.
Most successful story:
A List of Typos Made by God obviously. Yay for
spn_j2_bigbang.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Gonna have to go with
Consider the Hairpin Turn again. Which is not to say no one read it or that the people who read it didn't give me really heartwarming, thoughtful feedback, but it didn't get read as much as some other long Wincest fics I wrote this year, and I think that's a shame.
Most fun story: Oh, definitely
Not the Gumdrop Buttons. First of all, it came from me and
ordinaryink's CAPSLOCKING AT EACH OTHER. It was the first story I wrote after we became friends and started working together, the first thing we dreamed up together, and Tracey is definitely the most fun to get to know/collaborate with. It was also just such a silly, fun premise. I didn't ever have to take myself seriously with it. All the ginger!crack all the time.
Story with single sexiest moment:
Sparks are Whirling Faster. I usually am not turned on by my own porn. This year, I managed to push my own buttons for the first time ever. Knotting, you guys. Even I can't make that not hot.
Biggest story fail:
All Fired Up, This Soul. LET ME TELL YOU WHY. I actually don't dislike this fic at all, in fact, I consider it a fail for the exact opposite reason. I still think the premise was really good (not to honk my own horn here). Part One was and is pretty much exactly what I intended it to be. But I think I did the story a whole world of wrong by even bothering with Part Two. I pushed myself to write it because I wanted to get some tortured-Hell!Sam written before he popped up in canon, so I rushed it just to get those ideas out and with the hope of giving the story a more complete feeling. I didn't know about the wall and the fact that I would get the whole summer AND all of this season to indulge my desire for hell!Sam. I don't even think I did hell!Sam that well here, though I do think I made up for it in
Consider the Hairpin Turn. I worked really hard on, and, honestly, I think I did such a good job with Soulless!Sam's POV, and it sort of comes to nothing because it goes on to a shoddy Dean POV portion.
Hardest story to make: It's a close thing, but I'm gonna say
Vesti la Giubba. It took me a lot of tooth pulling to get that relationship to move the way I wanted it to. I also had no idea how to end it for most of the writing process, which I think shows in the fic ultimately. But I am still pretty proud of what I did achieve with it. The plot bunny ended up being a whole lot more than I intended to bite off because
secretlytodream's brain is EPIC, but I didn't let it intimidate me enough to give up on it, even when school was crushing me and I really wanted to.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? A lot less. But I also had a really tough semester and I think the quality of my work vastly improved, even if the quantity fell, so I am trying not to let myself be too mad at…myself.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? Um…I actually wrote some gen? That was kind of weird for me? It wasn't even that bad (though I am still pretty terrible at it :/).
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? I took a really big risk with
A List of Typos Made by God in that I got very personal with that story. I got the idea from a place no one should ever get plot bunnies for incest fic from and it really helped me tackle some of my own emotional baggage. It was rough, but it was pretty therapeutic in the end.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Um. How wrong is it that I wrote, like, all-female gangbangs and multiple fics about people with dog dicks and I'm over here like, "I don't think I wrote anything particularly wrong for me…" Maybe
Please Leave Your Taste on My Tongue? My menstrual kink, let me show you it.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Definitely
A List of Typos Made by God. I had to get into pre-series!Sam's mindset and early Sam is, you know, a little of a spoiled selfish brat. Writing this story didn't make me forget about that or ignore it or even want to ignore it, but I think it really helped me understand it and understand Sam's character-not just early Sam, but the beacon of perfection he becomes as the show progresses. It really made me love that character with an ache that I used to only feel for Dean.
Biggest Surprise: My writing community,
infatuated_ink reached over 200 watchers! Let me tell you who has two thumbs and never in a million years expected that to happen-this guy right here.
Top 5 Scenes from Anywhere You Would Choose to Have Illustrated:
1. Anything from my
kink_bigbang,
Sparks are Whirling Faster. I think my artist's computer must have exploded because she was having some problems with it, and I haven't heard from her in a while. I'm a little bummed this story has no art. :/
2. Anything from
Houses Out of Cardboard Boxes.
pandionpandeus did make
this adorable sketch of what I wanted to see most, baby!Castiel in his little trenchcoat, but I would love to see more of that, or maybe one of him and Sputnik. ^__^
3. Any of the scenes in
Living on Wildfires where Jared/Jensen/Jess and maybe the dogs are all just hanging out. I WEIRDLY REALLY LOVE THAT FIC, OKAY?
4. Cowgirl!Danneel/Saloon girl!Genevieve from
Have Mercy.
5. Heaven!Jess and Lisa sitting and waiting for the Winchesters together in
(Every Heart is a Package) Tangled Up in Knots Someone Else Tied.
The things I've learned this year: Well, this year, for the first time ever, I had to drop out of challenges that were in fandoms I was still active in. A lot of the things I didn't have to drop out of I just barely met the deadline for. It really sucks, it's something I used to pride myself on not doing. So I learned not to sign up for so much shit. Hopefully I'll be able to put this lesson to good use in 2012, though let's be honest, I have very little self control.
This is not a post about my New Year's, which ended up being really wonderful despite all my whining thanks to a last minute save by
beckaandzac. I'll tell you guys all about it...evennntuallyyy! As to resolutions, I did not accomplish mine for 2011 (which was to have sex finally) because it would have required being gross and skanky or, even worse, actually engaging in a romantic relationship. It's a bummer because it's the first time in like 5 years I don't keep to my resolution. Nuts! I'm not making one this year, but I am going to try to exercise...ever.
Anyway, I'm off to work on tentacle porn. I love you guys, and I really hope all of you are having as fantastic a 2012 so far as I am.
