Looking forward to Up in 3D this evening.

I'm a sucker for kumquats. A good friend who has enjoyed a jar of candied ones called because he knows someone who has a treefull. Unfortunately, the call came last week and I was not able to pick them up. When I did manage to check back in, they had started molding and the overwhelming majority of them had to be tossed.

I got the call yesterday that some were still okay, so I, at the last minute decided to drive down to Garden Grove to get them. My friend decided to ignore his diabetes and as a result lost a leg below the knee at the end of last year. This was the third time that I've seen him since the hospital, but I've invited him out on a number of occasions and have always gotten a pass. Now I know why.

I'm glad that I dropped everything to drive the 47 miles to get these. The fruit is a lost cause. Hanging out, getting to see his improvement and the amazing thing that they've done with prosthetics (titanium leg to the tune of $35k), and eating at Park Avenue, a wonderful 50s themed restaurant was great.

They whip their butter with rosemary, small bits of candied orange zest, and either a little bit of honey or a little of the candied orange syrup that made it just delectable. There went the better eating plan, but I did pass on the dessert, an appetizer, the cocktail and the nightcap. It's all about the small changes and not feeling deprived. The stuffed chop was perfect and delicious, but I'm always inevitably disappointed by the stuffing. I would have had the antelope medallions but they use demiglace and I don't eat cow, so that was out. Damned!

Need to post about the fabulousness that was NY. Re-entry was difficult and followed by a little emotional upheaval and some potentially challenging conversations to be had. Now I don't normally believe in the planet retrograde foo, but have experienced first hand and in abundance. Mercury can return to its regular orbit any time now. The post will need to wait to get the detail that it deserves because this is now day 2 of my regularly scheduled LA-lack-of-sleepedness. Going to take a 30 min power nap, so that I'm manage to stay awake through the movie.

The conversations are now in the past, went well, and weren't so bad despite a minor sticking my foot in my mouth incident. Life's no fun without a bump or two (or so I keep telling myself).

friends, food, ny
