Election Day [semi rant, but i like it]

Nov 04, 2008 11:03

today, everything will change.
a new leader will be selected for our country, and will start serving January 20, 2009.
this is an election for change...and no i'm not just quoting Barack Obama.
no matter what candidate is selected, there will be history being made, barriers being broken in the white house.

ironically, this is one of the most important elections in years, and i don't support either candidates completely. obama gets to me in a way that no one else has. everyone knows this man speaks like an angel, but can he realistically follow through with such radicalism? because compared to Bush, this IS radicalism...that's why republicans are calling it socialism. McCain...don't even get me started. McCain will not bring change, flatout. he will bring the same politics that have been in DC for too long, those fiscal conservatives who just wand money for themselves. this is merely my opinion, as i am sure many people will try to disagree with me.

i wish that joe biden was running for president. i've always loved this man. even though we don't see eye-to-eye on civil rights, almost every other issue i like him on. sarah palin on the other hand...dumber than a rock in my opinion. if john mccain loses, we are all doomed, inevitably. i don't want to sound like a horrible person, but when obama announced biden as his running mate, i said that he would make a good president if obama was assassinated. i'm still semi irked at mccain for being a dumbass and not choosing joe lieberman. i personally believe that if he chose him, the race would be significantly more competitive.

i think it's weird...looking at peoples' facebook statuses and seeing who they're voting for. countless people telling me to get out the vote and vote for their candidate. the issue of politics doesn't really come up when you're just starting to get to know people. but now that it's election day, i see that the sweetest, nicest, most open person on my floor [besides me that is], is very politically conservative and is voting mccain [so much so that she will not go to classes tomorrow if obama is elected [which a lot of people are doing the opposite for] ].

this election, for me, isn't about my true beliefs. because none of the candidates have all of my beliefs. i'm sure that is virtually impossible, because they have to reach such a wide range of people. i'm not "for" any candidate 100%. i believe that i'm voting for the lesser of two evils. and i KNOW that i am voting for change [how cliche] as i filled in the bubble for "Barack Obama" on my absentee ballot.

today is the first time that i have publically announced who i am voting for. it's taken me long and hard to come to an opinion. i was honestly considering bob barr. i remember when i first told aaron of this, he said that i was throwing my vote away [this was a few weeks after the primaries]. i think that is bullshit. there is no such thing as throwing your vote away.

i believe it is everyone's right to vote. if you don't like any of the candidates, you can leave it blank. that is YOUR way of showing your true beliefs. not by reluctantly voting for someone that you don't believe will better the country. maybe you don't want to vote for president. personally, i was more excited to vote for the senate, because i can stand behind John Sarbanes, like i told him in person i would do when i met him. maybe the only thing i had an opinion on this election was slots. i got my voice out on that, and since it is a referendum [as far as i know, tell me differently if its not] my vote actually DOES count. there is no such thing as throwing away a vote. saying that someone is throwing away a vote is like saying that someone's opinion is less valid than your own. and you don't have that kind of power over anyone.

happy election day everyone. i'll see you tomorrow after a winner is selected.

obama, voting, election, sarbanes
