Rose was amazed that the Doctor had finally taken them to 1979. Only they didn’t make it to Sheffield; they were in Southern California, and the music coming out of the club they’d parked the TARDIS next to was decidedly more Xanadu than Sid and Nancy.
She was further amazed by the Doctor’s enthusiastic insistence that they both dress for the occasion. In the TARDIS wardrobe she found a silver lame dress and glittering dance heels to match. After applying scads of sparkly eye makeup and lip gloss she looked worthy of crossing the velvet rope at Studio 54.
She entered the console room with a twirl, wondering if she’d find the Doctor in a white polyester suit a la John Travolta. What she saw was much more terrifying-and hilarious.
The Doctor was dressed in red short shorts held up by brightly colored braces, a t-shirt with the words “Boogie Fever” emblazed in glittering letters, striped knee socks, and roller skates.
Rose shrieked with laughter.
“What?” The Doctor asked.
“You have lost your mind!”
He shook his hips and Rose howled. “Stop it!” she said once she got her giggles under control. “You’re making my mascara run!” She wiped the tears from her eyes.
The Doctor looked her outfit over with an appreciative grin. “You look smashing!” he said as he rolled noisily across the bumpy floor grating.
“You look ridiculous.” She giggled.
“I do not! Roller disco dancing is the latest craze at this moment in time, and that’s a roller disco next door.”
Rose gaped at him. “You’re seriously going out there like that?”
He answered her by spinning around nimbly in his skates and coasting down the ramp to the door. Rose was gobsmacked.
“Come on!” He grinned. “Go find some skates so we can boogie!”
