hello. i'm still alive. just in case you were getting slightly worried. no? that's ok. i do tend to drop off the planet's face occasionally.
so, did i mention that i watched the Painted Veil on new year's day? hmm? well i did.
it was fantastic.
(i think i may be developing a bit of a celebrity-crush on Edward Norton, for anyone who cares. he's great. i just realized recently that it was him in the Illusionist, wasn't it? i want to own that movie. i liked it better than the Prestige, although that one was good too)
and the lady- ooh, i'm really bad with names... ;=/ anyway, she was awesome too.
i want to see it again.
and now i'm reading the book (hooray!)
now, i believe most of you know what an avid book reader i am? i think shawna and i first became friends when she tried to discover who was behind the pile of books next to her. anyways.
most of the time, when a movie is adapted from the book, even if you read the book after the movie, you can recognize that the book is much better. there are a few exceptions. sometimes the movie is good as, sometimes it's good but different (like in Chocolat- absolutely wonderful movie, not at all less than the book, just very different and good in it's own way. and she's one of my favorite authors now.)
in very rare occasions the book is crap and the movie is excellent (case-in-point; The Last of the Mohicans)
but mostly not. mostly you say, oh, the movie did a good job, didn't it? not as good as the book, of course, but very good (or not so good, whatever)
i haven't quite come across this feeling before. i really like the book. it's very good. but after seeing the movie... i like the way they changed some things in the movie better than how they are in the book. now, i do understand they couldn't have been portrayed this way in the actual book. but still. some things just seem better in the movie. much more poingnant. so it's sort of the reverse of most better-than-usual movie adaptations. "the movie is very good, it's not the book, but it's really very good." and now... well, the book is very good. it's not the movie... but it's really very good.
weird.
