. . a Japanese movie. :P Last night,
Densha Otoko was playing at the Vancouver Asian Film Festival and so I finally got to see it. Without going into details, I loved it: creative directing, wonderful music (free of blaring 80s vocals!), subtitles free of liner notes (the fansub of the series felt it needed to point out every single anime reference :P ) and great acting from the two leads who actually *look like real people*. I didn't believe Densha and Hermes could've ever made a couple, but the movie versions clicked just fine. By tightening the story and getting rid of the filler and over-the-top comedy, the movie ends up being light-years better than the series and is the best romantic movie I've seen since Ima Ai. 9 out of 10
Maan, it's times like these that I wish I had some local Japanese friends to talk to. At the theatre, it seemed like everyone had a Japanese friend in tow except me. >_< With all the Japanese stuff I've been watching lately, it drives me nuts not having anyone to discuss them with. Maybe I should volunteer at next year's film festival . .
Speaking of Japanese movies, I really wish I could see
Tada Kimi wo Aishiteru and
Nada Sousou. Why? Tada Ai is written by the Ima Ai writer while Nada Sousou is directed by the Ima Ai director and kicking butt at the box-office (Tada, not so much ^_^;).
Tada Ai also comes with another beautiful song from Otsuka Ai, which I decided to do a quick n' dirty translation of. Translating this song gave me a big headache since it appears to be mostly written backwards (ie. "Sometimes it's shown, your sleepy face").
Renai Shashin (A Romantic Photograph)
Otsuka Ai
(Underneath the lush evening sky)
(I saw the outline of your silhouette.)
(Sometimes you showed me that innocent sleepy face of yours.)
(I miss those days when you were watching me.)
[Ed's note: I give up. Too hard to translate this verse; it's like a run on sentence!]
(I only love you)
(Only you make me happy)
(The kiss we exchanged in the rain)
(Joined the silhouettes of two people)
(This feeling that we're already apart)
上手く言えないけど (is still hard for me to admit)
(Because since I met you, everday of mine)
キラキラと輝いたよ (sparkled with a brilliant radiance!)
(I only love you)
(You bring me happiness!)
(I only love you)
(Only you make me happy)
(In a small room, there is displayed)
(The smiles of two people)
(In a romantic photograph)
Anyway, I doubt either movie will make it to next year's film festival, so for the 10 or so people on my f-list still in Japan, please check 'em out so I know if I'm missing something good and if I need to be jealous of you. ;)

Y'know, my journal feels less and less like it belongs on an English website and more and more on Livedoor. :P
And speaking of recent movies, what is a "Borat" and what's it doing at
#1 at the box-office even in limited release and
at the top of the best movies of the year??
