Pattern Recognition

Even before I read the ridiculous thread of HBP predictions over on FA I've wanted to post my predictions on what will happen in HBP. I have. You can read them over at the A Chapter A Day forums. Feel free to join and add your predictions, too. You don't have to be a member of the a_chapter_a_day LJ community to join.

My Predictions for the HBP

Now, to birthday greetings! First, to chocfrgs4brkfst and auliana! Hope you two lovely ladies have a great, great birthday! Next to cute little Emma Watson! Fifteen...I didn't look that cute at 15 that's for sure! And, Emma Thompson, one of my favorite actresses. You have to love someone that has her Oscar displayed in her loo.

I just finished Pattern Recognition by William Gibson on madlorivoldmort's recommendation. It was a very good book. I loved the main character, but I was irritated with her name, Cayce. I worked very hard at the beginning of the book to say it correctly (Casey) despite the wierd spelling. Then, he informs us that it is actually pronounced "Case." So, I spent the rest of the book un-learning her name. But, the character is great. She has a trademark allergy which means that certain trademarks send her into panic attacks, specifically Tommy Hillfiger, Laura Ashley, Prada and the Michelin Man. She wears non-descript clothes of gray, black and white and removes the tags from them all. The most ironic part is that she has a gift for knowing if a logo or trademark will work. That is her job.

That turns out to have little to do with the plot, which centers around her searching for the source of 'footage.' Footage is bits and pieces of a movie that have been dissematated throughout the web. A huge fandom has sprung up around it with people debating the footage ad nausem. Sound familiar? Yeah, that was one thing that kept me reading. It was a good mystery with interesting characters. BUT, his writing style takes getting used to. Go into it knowing that the story and characters will overshadow his weird sentence structure and you'll be fine.

And, guess what? Turns out that the jacket Cayse wears the entire time, that she obsesses over really, is real. Buzz Rickson's MA-1 "Pattern Recognition." They were in the process of creating a Black MA-1 when Pattern Recognition came out. They got flooded with requests for Cayse's jacket, and created one in honor of the book.

I must prime the walls in the bathroom we are re-modeling today. So, I'm off to Home Depot for supplies.
