Though it has been less than a week since my last post, certain family members who shall remain nameless have been pestering for an update, so here we go. Life has become much busier with school starting, which is both a good and a bad thing. Today I learned about the stupid passé simple, the founding of the Red Cross and the French Revolution. One of my profs told me that the French call windows that open by pulling them up "guillotine windows" and that no one in France has them because of the emotional scar the guillotine left on their collective psyche. I also found out that the Revolution was officially declared on my birthday in 1789, and that the revoltionaries' efforts to get rid of everything that had to do with God or kings led to the establishment of the metric and decimal systems and a whole new calendar (which didn't survive) and the start of the cult-like adoration of the French language, used as a unifying factor in a country that no longer had a king or a religion to do the uniting.

I have heard some disturbing reports from home, but I refuse to allow this to spoil my good times. At least not yet. There's nothing I can do about it anyway. So just everyone take care of yourselves OK?
