What's in a Name?

Feb 08, 2009 19:42

Being something of a word nerd, I subscribe to the OED word of the day. Often it's boring. Yesterday was "whip". If I'm not especially interested in the word and its origins I'll just delete it, but every so often I'll get something a little more interesting which makes the subscription worthwhile.

Today's word is "meronym". This struck my fancy since I could be said to be a meronym, having a name that starts with mer. Of course, it doesn't actually mean that. A meronym is an object that is a component or member of another object. "Finger" is a meronym of "hand". "Violinist" is a meronym of "orchestra". There's also a realm of logic called mereology, which deals with parts and wholes.

Now I just have to find a whole to be a part of. *sniff* Sorry, got a little maudlin there. I'm better now.

nerdacious, words
