Farewell to Brookland

Aside from the awesome free swimming pool and the coffee shop on the corner, I never really bonded with Brookland as a neighborhood. It's a little too limited, too suburban. Too lacking in things that I tend to bond with, like bookstores and really great restaurants. However, there is one Brookland icon I will really miss when I move out to VA: the newspaper guy.

Every weekday morning at rush hour he stands at the top of the stairs at the metro stop in a baseball cap and a yellow reflective vest passing out the Express, the free commuter paper. He passes out papers and says hi to everyone on their way to work and hollers things like, "Good morning Brookland! Welcome to Monday! It's a beautiful day!" whether it is actually a beautiful day or not. He calls me Miss Book Club because I always have a book to read on the metro instead of the paper. He was gone for a couple of days a week or two ago, and I missed him. Everyone did, and we told him so when he came back. My morning commute will be longer from Arlington, and more expensive, and less cheerful without someone to welcome me to Monday.
