Yeah. I think the problem was that in the end it seemed that he was so much like much of my past, all that had hapened before didn't seem to matter.
However, it could be more true to say that the farewell doesn't nullify the interim - the end didn't justify the means, and maybe all's well that ends well - but maybe things are okay as long as you remember them fondly.
Maybe the problem was saying it was him that had helped...
