Batteries and Hatin' on the Olympics

Jun 30, 2008 09:24

Today feels like my first free day for a while.  I have no obligations.  And I didn't have to get up at 6:00 am.

I think I am going to go to the battery store, yes that's right, a store that sells nothing but batteries.  I am looking for these re-chargeable Eneloop batteries.  Since my camera rips through batteries like Amy Winehouse goes through rehab facilities, I decided it was time to get some re-chargeable batteries.  According to my internet research, most of the battery chargers out there are crappy because they charge the battery too fast, which causes it to die quickly.

I realized that I have been home for a month, yet time is all fuzzy and non-linear.  I was trying to remember what I did last Monday and I am drawing a blank.  This is why I started keeping a photo blog in the first place.

Last night I saw a commercial for the Olympics and it brought out my hatred of the Olympics.  I just find it kind of gross when competitive sports are held as the absolute pinnacle of human accomplishment.  Really, people who are consumed with a pointless and selfish pursuit which has no tangible benefit to anyone?  Mindless discipline and ruthless competitiveness are equated with being a person of superior moral standing?  How exactly does being the fastest guy in a pool solve any problems?  It's not that I mind the sports, they're usually far more entertaining than regular TV sports.  Or that I mind the athletes particularly, except that I find that kind of obsession about a sport kind of disturbing.  Kind of like people who obsess about their dogs and dress them up and refer to them as their children.  The thing that really gets to me is the whole mythologizing of the Olympics.  That it somehow represents a quality of goodness, virtue, and hope.  The fact that millions-- if not billions-- of people actually feel that way just grosses me out.  The Olympics are no better than watching any other game show.
