last friday steph (my wife) and i went over to our friends gretchin and pete's place for dinner. then we all caught a ride down to the new and improved underground atlanta-after-dark. we spent most of the night at charlie brown's caberet, which is all drag and a little silliness. i'd seen most of the performers before at a club that is now closed. only about 2 (outta 8 or so) are really impressive to me. it is fun, but at times i think it's overrated. i think a lot of people go like rubberneckers for the novelty and thereby the show's entertainment value gets inflated. hell, most of it's just lip synching and a little dancing by real life trannies in glamorous outfits. sure there are some goodlooking trannies so feminine and pretty that it's hard to remember that they are not, at least biologically, what we've been taught to think of as "real" women. but to be called a caberet there was very little quality in the actual show. no real singing, and not a whole lot of impressive choreography.
i think the inflation on the entertainment value of the actual show is derived from the thrill of shock that gender-bending brings upon a lot of folks' bland conventionalist perspectives. in other words many people go for more of a freakshow than an actual caberet, this makes me somewhat sad. but i did have fun, especially considering that aside from the overpriced drinks the door charge is fairly cheap. so overall i'd say it's worth it.
being with gretchin, pete, and my honey is really what made the night. they are delightful people and the majority of little adventures we've shared could all be lumped into the category labeled as "good times".
the rest of the weekend was also good. it was out to eat for lunch on saturday, coffee shop and reading that afternoon. some friends came over that night to watch "the godfather: part 1". this must've been my third and definitely best viewing yet. then it was church all day yesterday, and "party monster" by myself after steph went to bed last night. and now here i am wasting time rather than cleaning. steph says the house must be clean before tomorrow since my biological mother is coming to visit. this will only be the third time we've seen each other since we've met. she'll be driving over from birmingham (over 120 miles) after she drops her son off for school. all of our visits have been brief, and i imagine this one won't last for more than a few hours. i imagine it will be interesting and more than a little awkward.
