Backyard Bobcat

Aug 10, 2009 20:32

As in, a bobcat wandering through my backyard for a relaxing evening of eyeing what few squirrels I have. Or rather, what few squirrels I have left. A few weeks back I noticed how very many squirrels I had. Recently, it occurred to me that I haven't seen that many squirrels in a while - just a couple of the critters instead of double handfuls. I know the hawks like to stop by on a regular basis and one night a few months back, I saw a fox. Today, I saw a fully grown bobcat. Photos under the cut!

It first showed up around 6:20 p.m. in my backyard, strolled past the burn pile into my neighbor's back yard, and settled down. By then I had the camera and was trying to get a shot from inside the house so that I wouldn't disturb the cat. That meant that I was shooting through the glass of the French doors, across the porch, through the screen of the porch and another 50 or so feet. It gradually moved farther across the neighbor's yard, toward the yards that back onto hers from the next street over. By then it was at least 100 feet away. If you didn't know the circumstances under which I was shooting, you'd think these were really crappy shots (and they are) BUT I took longshots to give an idea of how well the zoom actually worked. In other words, as crappy as the close ups are, they could have been way worse.
